I Didn't Expect This Easy TikTok Hack For Instant Hair Volume to Work, but Here We Are

Like most people, I spend more time than I'd like to admit scrolling TikTok. However, I won't say it's all been for nothing — I've found an endless supply of genius Amazon buys [1], learned more about DIYs [2] than I could have ever imagined, and discovered beauty tips and tricks [3] that even as an editor in the industry, I didn't know existed. (Not to mention, a lot of cute dog videos that bring me joy.)

TikTok and its 800 million users are a wealth of knowledge and if you tap into that mix of self-proclaimed and professional beauty experts [4] on the platform, I can pretty much guarantee you'll learn something. When I was scrolling the other day, I stumbled upon this hair hack by user Alessa Miki [5] for adding instant volume to your roots and I decided to try it myself.

I have relatively flat roots and am always looking for something, be it a product, hairstyle, or tip, to add some boost to my hair. In the TikTok video, the user simply switches her part to add instant volume to her roots. Now, I know what you're thinking: people rotate between a middle part and a side part to add volume all the time. But in this video, she went with the classic (and by classic I mean totally old school, throwback) way of parting your hair: a zig-zag.

I can vividly remember asking my mom to part my hair in a zig-zag, securing my glittery butterfly clips in place [6], and heading off to school feeling like the coolest kid in the world. While this attempt at the hairstyle was for the purpose of volume and not to look trendy, I felt nostalgic just the same.

Using the end of a comb I switched my middle part to my best attempt at a zig-zag. While it wasn't perfect (I don't remember it being this hard... where's mom when ya need her?) I could definitely tell a difference. Where my roots laid flat before, they had some natural lift, sans any products or heat.

Who knew when I was in elementary school I was unintentionally adding some major volume to my roots? Not me.
