How to Re-Create the Floating Eyeliner Look That Took Over Instagram This Year

08/11/2019 - 01:10 AM

Floating strokes of eyeliner [1] took over Instagram and the red carpet as one of 2019's biggest makeup trends. You might have seen Lucy Boynton, Kylie Jenner [2], and various other celebrities give the look a go early this year; but as we near holiday season, you can use it to stand out at your next party or get-together (especially if you plan to skip the glitter).

If you have a shaky hand or you have zero artistic know-how, don't worry. I've shared my best tips on how to seamlessly re-create the floating eyeliner look. Read on to learn more.

Lucy Boynton at SAG Awards 2019

My inspiration was actress Lucy Boynton at the 2019 SAG Awards, who wore strokes of black eyeliner beneath her brow and on the inner corners of her eyes.

Prime Your Lids

First, prime your lids for makeup. I chose the Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion [3] ($13), as it typically soaks up any excess oils and grips onto my makeup so that it lasts through hours of wear.

Pick Your Eyeliner

How precise your floating liner is depends on the eyeliner you wield, so any eyeliner with a sharp and flexible tip as well as an inky black formula would be perfect. For this, I chose the CoverGirl Get in Line Active Liquid Liner [4] ($7).

Draw Your Line

Start your line at the midpoint between the inner corner of your eye and eyebrow. In one motion, sweep the liner above your highest crease to where your brow ends. Don't worry about how opaque the formula looks or if your pen begins to skip. You can make changes to your line later.

Final Look

Boynton added liner to the inner corners of her eyes, but because of the dramatic folds I have in the area, I decided to move my lines to the outer corners. The beauty of this look is that there really isn't a wrong way to create it.
