Fragrances That Smell Like Summer Holiday 2021

From the Mediterranean to Morocco: These Fragrances Smell Exactly Like Summer Holiday

As POPSUGAR editors, we independently select and write about stuff we love and think you'll like too. If you buy a product we have recommended, we may receive affiliate commission, which in turn supports our work.

Whether you prefer the Mediterranean coast, the Greek Isles, the beaches of Barcelona, or faraway excursions to tropical paradises like Tahiti or Bora Bora, there's no denying that us Brits love our summer holidays. The past year has kept many of us from being able to get away, and unfortunately, we still don't know what the summer months of 2021 will look like quite yet when it comes to international travel, although there's a good chance we will be spending most of our time exploring the many beaches, natural parks, and country getaways within our own borders. And whilst the UK has some really lovely places to go on holiday to — some of the beaches in Wales are just as picturesque as the ones in Spain — we're not going to lie, there's a part of us that really misses the consistent 40-degree temperatures, bright-blue skies, and local cuisines of our favourite summer holiday spots.

One way you can transport yourself across the ocean without hopping on a plane? Fragrance. No, seriously. Not only are there many perfumes out there inspired by popular summer holiday destinations — like Portofino, Tahiti, and Morocco — but your sense of smell is also a powerful mnemonic device, e.g. memory aid, that can help you vividly recall a past time, place, or event. If you loved your trip to Capri a couple of years ago, you could try spritzing Acqua di Parma's Arancia di Capri eau de parfum to mentally transport you back there with its notes of orange, neroli, and caramel. Ever explored the American Southwest with your friends? Well, Floral Street's Arizona Bloom captures both the dry heat and distinct flora and fauna of the Arizona desert.

Not all fragrances that smell like summer holidays are inspired by a specific locale, however; some are just meant to smell like a day at the beach. Many of these fragrances — the most famous of which include Estée Lauder Bronze Goddess, Bobbi Brown Beach, and Tom Ford Soleil Blanc — use creamy notes like coconut, white flowers, and vanilla for that tropical sweetness, musk to give them a "skin scent" sort of quality to evoke what you smell like after a day spent in salt water and the sun, and a note called benzoin, which is a natural resin that smells a bit like vanilla and is used to generate a sense of warmth and heat in the scents.

So if you're looking for a way to get yourself into that summer vibe regardless of whether or not we can travel internationally, sit back, grab a fruity beverage (tiny umbrella highly recommended), and keep reading to discover all our favourite fragrances that smell exactly like a summer holiday.

Tom Ford Neroli Portofino Eau de Parfum

Tom Ford Neroli Portofino Eau de Parfum (£174) is quite possibly one of the most iconic summer scents to ever launch — a perfume that aims to capture the smell of the Italian Riviera, from the citrus trees to the breeze coming off the Mediterranean. A firm favourite of beauty editors, the scent is loaded with citrus notes (bergamot, Mandarin orange, lemon, bitter orange, orange blossom, and neroli), as well as earthy green notes (rosemary, myrtle, and angelica) and a hint of white florals courtesy of jasmine.

Sana Jardin Revolution de la Fleur Eau de Parfum

With Sana Jardin Revolution de la Fleur Eau de Parfum (£95), you're instantly transported to a remote and tropical destination like Bali, Tulum, or Mustique. The scent is a lush bouquet of white florals and roses, with a touch of citrus (that would be neroli) and a smooth, sensual base courtesy of vanilla-bean extract and sandalwood. A scent that works all day and all year long, we especially love it for long, hot summer nights.

Tom Ford Soleil Blanc

Tom Ford Soleil Blanc (£174) is one incredibly sexy, summery fragrance. It smells like a hot summer day at the beach with a blend of sultry white florals, spicy pink pepper, cardamom, and sweet benzoin (a natural resin that smells a bit like vanilla). But what really rounds out the scent is the creamy base of coconut milk, amber, and tonka bean, which balances out the spice and makes this perfume smell absolutely irresistible.

Maison Christian Dior Eden-Roc Eau de Parfum

Part of the brand's luxury La Privée Collection perfume range, Maison Christian Dior Eden-Roc Eau de Parfum (£220) is inspired by the historic and ultra glamorous Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Cap D'Antibes. Like many scents inspired by the Mediterranean, Eden-Roc smells sunny and warm, thanks to quintessential summer notes of jasmine and coconut. But what makes this fragrance unique is the salty, mineral notes and the herbaceous green notes that help transport you to the hotels' grounds — from the lush gardens surrounding it to the sea water crashing on the rocks below. Spray it, close your eyes, and you can almost feel the sun on your skin, the water at your feet, and the Mediterranean breeze in the air around you.

Floral Street Arizona Bloom Eau de Parfum

Described by the brand as a "dry floral amber", the Floral Street Arizona Bloom Eau de Parfum (£60) was inspired by the flora and fauna of desert landscapes. To us, however, it smells like a warm summer breeze and sunscreen-slathered skin. Notes of coconut and fig leaves add that quintessential summer sweetness; cashmere and musk give the eau a sexy, second-skin effect; whilst jasmine petals provide a creamy quality that will make you want to keep spritzing again and again.

Acqua di Parma Blu Mediterraneo Arancia di Capri Eau de Toilette

Acqua di Parma Blu Mediterraneo Arancia di Capri Eau de Toilette (£82) is another scent inspired by the Mediterranean, with the scent of oranges featured prominently in the top notes, along with other citrus fruits like mandarin and lemon. What makes this scent fragrance unique, however, is the addition of caramel in the base, which adds a delectable, gourmand quality to an otherwise fresh, juicy fragrance.

Estée Lauder Bronze Goddess Eau Fraiche Skinscent

Estée Lauder Bronze Goddess Eau Fraiche Skinscent (£65) is truly summer in a bottle. It's amazing how something with so many sweet, creamy notes (coconut, vanilla, sandalwood, amber, tiare flower, and jasmine) can still smell so fresh, which can only be due to the lemon, orange, mandarin, and bergamot that make up the fragrance's middle notes.

Loewe x Paula’s Ibiza Eau de Toilette

Loewe x Paula's Ibiza Eau de Toilette (£68) "reminds me of the sun-kissed summers I spent in Ibiza as a teenager", Loewe designer J.W. Anderson told told Women's Wear Daily in an interview, and is inspired by the island's now-defunct iconic boutique.

So what does Ibiza smell like according to Anderson and Loewe's in-house perfumer Nuria Cruelles? Beachy, but not in the sweet, tropical sort of way. Rather it's metallic and watery, kind of like the ocean itself — or the driftwood and seaweed that's been washed ashore. There is coconut water in the fragrance, but it's cut with galbanum (which has a green, seaweed-like quality) and synthetic ambergris, that gives the eau de toilette a skin-like quality. Add patchoui, incense, and sandalwood (an homage to Ibiza's bohemian past) into the mix and you have a truly unique summer scent that's fresh, sharp, and incredibly sexy at the same time.

Maya Njie Tropica Eau de Parfum

Maya Njie Tropica Eau de Parfum (£90) doesn't just smell like a lush, tropical paradise, thanks to a combination of warm, juicy notes like citrus fruit, pineapple, fig, and coconut and slightly metallic ones such as iris and ambergris. It actually makes you feel like you're in a tropical paradise; you'll feel calmer and more serene — the same way you do when you've gone on holiday to a remote, sunny island.

Clean Reserve Solar Bloom

Similar to the Tom Ford scent, this fragrance smells warm and vaguely tropical, which is why we've been dousing ourselves in it every summer since it launched in 2019. But whereas the Tom Ford perfume is ultra sexy, Clean Reserve Solar Bloom (£82) is greener and more sparkly. Like the Tom Ford, it also contains jasmine and coconut milk but brings fresh and citrusy notes like mandarin orange, bergamot, freesia, orange blossom, and vetiver into the mix.

Tory Burch Bel Azur

The Tory Burch Bel Azur (£61) bottle features a shade of blue so crisp and so calming, it immediately transports you to the ocean without even smelling it. The juice inside, however, is incredibly bright, vibrant, and beachy, with lots of citrusy and earthy notes that are softened by the addition of peony, patchouli, and cedarwood oil. The refreshing eau is the perfect perfume to spritz when it's hot and humid outside.

Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Crush Body Fragrance Mist

OK, so Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Crush Body Fragrance Mist (£32) isn't an eau de parfum, but in the summertime, sometimes a lighter, airier body spray is the way to go. It's inspired by the scent of the brand's iconic Bum Bum Cream, which is deliciously sweet thanks to notes of pistachio and salted caramel, and promises to bring the sultry, sweaty beaches of Rio de Janeiro to mind every time you spritz — which you can do a lot thanks to the large 240ml bottle. A little tip: spray some on your brush before running it through your hair to scent your hair without overly saturating it.
