3 Breakout Haircut Trends to Wear This Spring (Before Everyone Else)

26/02/2020 - 11:35 PM

In the spirit of honesty, we'd like to disclose that there is no "right" way to kick off a new season. But in Spring, it's certainly not not sprinkling your iCal with al fresco brunches and outdoor concerts (then immediately online-ordering a brand-new wardrobe to wear to all of the above). The itch to get moving tends to rise with the temperature, and you want your hair [1] to match that energy. The only prerequisite to firing up the group chat, then, is to book yourself a haircut [2].

Here's what you should ask for, boiled down to one word: movement. "Every time Spring comes along, hair tends to get more layered," said master hairstylist Edward Tricomi [3] of Warren Tricomi Salons. "In Winter, styles are sleeker and straighter [4], but that's harder to accomplish in the warmer months. With more humidity, you need more movement because your hair will swell more."

Like hemlines, cuts will also be getting shorter and shorter [5] (that's because "people like to dust their hair when it gets warmer," he said), making now prime time to lob it all off, if you're so inclined. If you're looking for the exact haircut trend [6] to get you in the Spring spirit — even if the only plan you have on the agenda is sitting on the couch binge-watching Love Is Blind [7] for the foreseeable future — we're breaking down our three favourites ahead.

Spring Haircut Trend: The Clavicut

A perennial tried-and-true favourite, the clavicut is the best of both worlds: short enough to pass as a long bob [8] but long enough to hit your clavicle. (Hence the name.)

"A clavicut is a collarbone-grazing style that is flattering for all hair types and face shapes," Tricomi said. "This style features back strands resting on the nape of your neck with the face-framing strands dipping an extra inch or two until they kiss your collarbone — an edgy yet sophisticated style, all at the same time."

Spring Haircut Trend: '60s-Style Pixie Cut

Experts have predicted that pixie cuts will be everywhere [9] come 2020 — a forecast Tricomi agrees with, since it is "the lowest-maintenance and most comfortable haircut that exists," he said — and the trend will be especially big for Spring. "It's perfect for fine hair to create the illusion of texture and thickness."

But this isn't your average pixie — it's the retro-looking, gamine haircut of yore that's short all over and combed to the side — reminiscent of the 1960s Twiggy haircuts. They are long on top with disconnected sides overlaying with a lot of layers and movement. The longest piece is midchin.

Spring Haircut Trend: The "Graduated" Bob

If you're of the mindset that a bob is a bob [10] is a bob [11], get ready for the freshest take on the look this Spring. (Also, have you been living under a rock?)

What's new this time around is the "graduated bob" haircut — also called the A-line or inverted bob [12] — that features hair that graduates from long in the front to short in the back, with a V-line that hits the nape of the neck. "This is softly layered as well for motion and movement," Tricomi said.
