4 Sporty Hairstyles That Work in and Out of the Gym

The ultimate sporty look isn't complete without a sporty hairstyle to match. We've partnered with Tangle Teezer to show you the creative styles that are a must-try.

You've already got the fierce trainers and matching workout set. Why stop there? When your outfit is this on point, it deserves a fierce hairstyle to match. From a bold plait to a power pony, we're all about styles that go beyond the basic bun. If you're looking for hairspiration, we discovered plenty at the recent POPSUGAR x Tangle Teezer x Puma Fit & Fearless event to celebrate the launch of the new Tangle Teezer x Puma Compact Styler Detangling Hairbrushes. With two-tiered teeth for quick and painless detangling and a protective covering (not to mention an energising pop of colour), these compact neon hairbrushes are the perfect gym-bag addition to help you achieve all your hair goals on the go. Ahead, meet the four sporty styles to try the next time you want to activate power mode in and out of the gym.

1. Double Dutch Plaits

Dutch plaits are the cool-girl alternative to classic french plaits and one of the easiest styles to pull off quickly, especially when you're on the go. First, create a centre parting to the nape of your neck and section your hair into two sections before brushing each section with the Tangle Teezer x Puma Compact Styler Detangling Hairbrush. On one side, start the plait at your hairline, weaving each of the three pieces under the one in the middle, instead of over. Add more hair with each piece until you reach the nape, at which point switch over to a traditional three-strand plait until the end of your hair. Repeat on the other side.

Tip: Keep the plait pulled tight as you go for a cleaner look. If you want a messier vibe, you can pull pieces apart once you're finished.

2. Bubble Ponytail

If you want something that makes an impact with lots of volume but still gets the hair out of your face, look no further than a bubble ponytail. To create this look, use the Tangle Teezer x Puma Compact Styler Detangling Hairbrush to pull the top layer of your hair back and secure. To create the first bubble, take the ends of the layer you just secured and use the hairbrush to tease the strands. Then, pull back a second layer and combine this new section of hair with the ends of the first layer that you just teased and secure them together to complete the bubble. Repeat this process until you reach the end of your hair.

Tip: The higher you create the first bubble, the more bubbles you can create as you work your way down your hair.

3. Upside-Down Plaited Ponytail

A french or dutch plait woven on the underside of a ponytail from the nape of the neck upwards is romantic and unexpected — like a sweet surprise every time you swish your hair. After brushing your hair with the Tangle Teezer x Puma Compact Styler Detangling Hairbrush, start by flipping your hair over to reach the strands closest to your nape. There, start plaiting the strands together, adding more hair into your french or dutch plait as you go. Once you reach the desired placement of your ponytail, secure the plait and sweep it, along with the rest of your hair, together into a ponytail.

Tip: While this look works with either a french or dutch plait, since you'll be plaiting upside down, a dutch plait (with the pieces weaving under rather than over) is easier to do.

4. Boxer Plait Half Up

For a fun and fresh spin on the traditional half-up style, you can incorporate two boxer plaits on either side of a centre parting. This look is ideal for shorter hair or when you want to show off a bit of texture. First, brush your hair with the Tangle Teezer x Puma Compact Styler Detangling Hairbrush and section off a one-inch strip of hair starting from the hairline all the way back to the crown on one side of your part. Begin dutch plaiting this section back towards the crown, ensuring you only pull in pieces from within this one-inch section in order to maintain that boxed-in look. Once you reach the crown, secure the plait, and repeat on the other side of the part. Once both plaits are complete, you can either secure them together to create a half-up ponytail or keep them separate as half-up pigtails.

Tip: Since this style looks better with a bit of texture, finish it off with a blast of texture spray to the hair that's down.
