The "Job" Haircut Is the Epitome of Cool Girl Chic

26/07/2023 - 12:00 AM

What is it about major life changes — or pure boredom — that has you conditioned to reach for a pair of scissors? Somehow, cutting off your hair has become symbolic of embracing change and embarking on an entirely new path — especially when the cut is as drastic as a bob [1]. Over the last few months, we've seen bobs become one of the biggest haircut trends [2], and for good reason. They're daring, they're chic, and there are so many different iterations, if you're considering a change, there's a style made just for you.

There's the "box" bob [3], the blunt bob, and even the "sliced" bob [4], but the latest version on our radar is the "job." It's a shorter version of the classic bob, and according to celebrity stylists, it's about to take over your social media feeds (if you haven't already started seeing it everywhere).

Ahead, Frédéric Fekkai [5], celebrity hairstylist and founder of the eponymous hair-care brand, tells us everything to know about the job haircut, like what it is, who it looks best on, and how to style it. Keep scrolling to read up on the new style.

What Is the Job Haircut Trend?

The job, more formally known as the jaw-length bob, is a haircut that accentuates the jaw and chin. "Popular amongst celebrities and influencers like Hailey Bieber [6] and Charli D'Amelio [7], this hairstyle is versatile, low-maintenance, and works well for both straight or wavy hair with or without bangs," Fekkai tells POPSUGAR.

Although it can be customised for different hair types [8], if you're considering the change, you should take both your texture and face shape into account. "Most bob haircuts are suited for fine to medium hair and oval face shapes," he says. However, cut at the right angles, the job haircut can "effortlessly elevate your style and complement your facial features."

If you're ready to take the plunge, Fekkai says to ask your stylist to cut your hair right at the jawline, framing your face to highlight your best features. "Creating this look involves ensuring a very straight line that is shorter at the neck and slightly longer at the chin," he says. "An undercut is essential for achieving excellent results."

How to Style the Job Haircut

This style looks great air-dried if your hair has even the tiniest bit of wave to it. If you plan on using hot tools to style it, it's important to always start out with a heat protectant. Our current favourite is the Drybar Hot Toddy Heat Protectant Mist [9] (£25).

The cut also looks nice styled straight with a flat iron or curled.
