As 2022 comes to a close, we would be remiss not to look back on how much we have changed as beauty-lovers. But as we reach the end of the year, we're starting to see a big shift from the effortless "clean girl" look [3] to a more grunge aesthetic.

While makeup in 2022 was all about bold but practical glam — think embellishments [4], bold lips, and eye-catching hues paired with base makeup that will last — 2023 is about bold makeup that doesn't necessarily have to be practical. We're prepared to see heavy eye makeup paired with messy eyeliner, heavily powdered faces, and the ever popular "marinated" makeup [5]. We've asked professional makeup artists to lay out exactly what we can expect in the new year to stay ahead of the curve. "Marinated makeup is based on the philosophy that aged makeup looks better than when you first apply it," Lewis says. "People are starting to apply their makeup hours before they need it done — and even napping in it — to let it settle and let their natural oil production kick in to enhance the look." Although the style is trending, Lewis warns that some makeup shouldn't be left on the skin for hours as it has the potential to clog your pores. "Aim for a makeup line that is noncomedogenic or can be slept in, like Aisling Organics if your goal is leaving your look on as long as possible."

Avril Lavigne [6] makeup is a hot trend coming off the heels of the "clean girl aesthetic" that has taken over our social media feeds over the past year. The look steers away from being minimal and perfect and instead aims to be messy and look lived-in. "Think the Christina Aguilera [7] 'Dirrty' album era — dark eyes, no 'colouring inside the lines;' quickly placed makeup paired with smudged eyeliner, eyeshadow, and minimal precision," Krysta Lewis [8], professional makeup artist and founder of Aisling Organics [9] tells POPSUGAR. 2023 Makeup Trend: Graphic Eyeliner

"Graphic eyeliner uses striking geometric shapes and pops of colour to draw attention to the eye," Nick Lujan [10], director of artistry and education at Kevyn Aucoin tells POPSUGAR. The trend can be as simple as small lines above the lash line, or it can go as bold as full geometric shapes from the eyelid to the eyebrow. To achieve the look, Lujan suggests using the Kevyn Aucoin Precision Liquid Liner [11] (£28), which Lujan says is great for creating winged and graphic shapes.

Coquette makeup is a flirty, feminine aesthetic that brings us straight back to our Tumblr days. Lewis says the look aims to be powdery, flushed, and doll-like, similar to a look you'd see Cassie from "Euphoria [12]" sporting. Coquette eye makeup will feature soft pastels, while face makeup should include a blurring face powder and bright-pink cheeks.
