4 Ghoulish Halloween Makeup Looks You Can Create — Using Only Drugstore Products

28/09/2020 - 05:00 PM

You don't have to break the bank to go all out on Halloween [1]. There are dozens of beauty brands and retailers [2] whose extensive lineups are worth sifting through for some products that'll take your Halloween beauty to the next level [3]. If you're looking for high-quality makeup that's still affordable, NYX Professional Makeup is always a great place to start. The cosmetics brand boasts tons of products that are both simple yet extravagant, and they're all available at drugstore prices.

With that in mind, NYX just dropped a Haunted Dollhouse campaign for Halloween [4] featuring four beauty looks in collaboration with special-effects makeup artist Mimi Choi [5]. Each look uses the brand's star products, including the newly launched SFX Face and Body Paint Palette, which costs only $15.

From a dark-magic voodoo doll to a spooky ballerina, check out the Halloween makeup looks Choi and NYX created together, along with step-by-step tutorials on how you can re-create them at home.

Broken Doll

How to create the distorted-mouth illusion:

Step 1: Prep the skin with a translucent powder. Then use concealer on the lips and set with powder again.
Step 2: Lightly map out the slice in the jaw using a dark eyeshadow colour, then use a black eyeliner to create the illusion of blank space on both sides of the face. Set it with black eyeshadow.
Step 3: Add shading to the slices on either side of your mouth with a neutral-coloured eyeshadow and concealer.
Step 4: Draw out a new set of lips using a red lipliner pencil. Sketch it slightly off-centre so the mouth appears shifted, then colour the lips in with the matching lipstick shade.
Step 5: Shade the corners of the mouth with a black gel liner and, using a black liquid liner, paint staples onto the mouth. Shade the staples with a neutral-coloured eyeshadow to create a 3D effect.
Step 6: Use a white liner to hollow out the mouth for more depth.

Suggested products: Can't Stop Won't Stop Contour Concealer [6] ($9), High Glass Finishing Powder [7] ($12), SFX Primary Face and Body Paint Palette [8] ($15), Ultimate Shadow Palette in Phoenix [9] ($18), Epic Ink Liner [10] ($9), Epic Wear Liquid Liner in Red and White [11] ($10), and Suede Matte Lipstick in Cherry Skies [12] ($8).

Newlywed Undead

How to create the ripped-skin illusion:

Step 1: Outline the tears in the skin using a flesh-coloured lipliner, then colour them in using a red liquid liner.
Step 2: Shade the tears with a deep red eyeshadow and then add depth by outlining the corners with a black liquid liner.
Step 3: Highlight the edges of each tear with white liner. Then blend the highlighted edges with concealer.
Step 4: Apply body glitter to the inside of each tear before further defining them using gel liner.
Step 5: Set the look with a finishing powder.

Suggested products: High Glass Finishing Powder [13] ($12), California Beamin' Face & Body Bronzer [14] ($13), Jumbo Eye Pencil in Black Bean [15] ($5), SFX Primary Face and Body Paint Palette [16] ($15), Ultimate Utopia Shadow Palette [17] ($35), and Soft Matte Lip Cream in Transylvania [18] ($7).

Dark-Magic Voodoo Doll

How to create the stitched-face illusion:

Step 1: On your forehead, use a dark eyeshadow colour to outline a split. Then, fill the split in using a flesh-coloured eyeshadow.
Step 2: Add depth to the split by tracing it with a black eyeliner and highlight the outer edges with concealer.
Step 3: Use a black liquid liner to draw eyelets on both sides of the split before outlining them with white liner to make them pop. Then, use the same black liquid liner to paint the laces.
Step 4: Shade and add depth to the laces with eyeshadow before adding detail to the laces with white liner.

Suggested products: SFX Primary Face and Body Paint Palette [19] ($15), SFX Brights Face and Body Paint Palette [20] ($15), Epic Ink Liner [21] ($9), Suede Matte Lip Liner in Kitten Heels [22] ($4), and Shout Loud Satin Lipstick in Opinionated [23] ($9).

Prima Ballerina

How to create the shattered-glass illusion:

Step 1: Prep the skin using a translucent powder.
Step 2: Draw the cracks with a white pencil and add depth using a warm eyeshadow colour.
Step 3: Shade the inside of the cracks using a dark brown shade of eyeshadow, and then highlight the edges of the cracks with a white pencil.
Step 4: Use a dark liquid eyeliner to add more depth and detail to the crack and make the illusion more realistic.
Step 5: Set it with translucent finishing powder.

Suggested products: Can't Stop Won't Stop Full Coverage Foundation [24] ($15), SFX Primary Face and Body Paint Palette [25] ($15), Ultimate Utopia Shadow Palette [26] ($35), Epic Ink Liner [27] ($9), Epic Wear Liquid Liner in White [28] ($10), and Suede Matte Lipstick in ElectroShock [29] ($8).
