Popsugar Beauty Skin Health People Embracing Skin Conditions on Instagram The People Behind #SkinPositivity Are on a Mission to Normalise Skin Conditions 3 June 2020 by Tori Crowther View On One Page Photo 1 of 19 ADVERTISEMENT () Start Slideshow View this post on Instagram "You look just fine." - person without skin issues Worse than the mean/negative comments I've gotten about my skin, are the ones that downplay the struggle I face every day. When I hear statements like this, or read comments on other people's posts in the same vein, it drives me crazy. Part of me wants to say "so you're telling me that you'd be 100% fine with fire red cheeks and cystic acne that leaves bumps and scars all over your face? It wouldn't affect you one bit?" How can these people not realize that it's more than appearance? That it's painful, water burns, and you can never not think about it because it will itch and scab and show up in your peripheral vision when talking to people. But today I had one of those rare "aha" moments. Maybe this isn't a glass empty statement people make. Maybe my anger and annoyance isn't actually about what they said, but more about me and what I lack. In reality, I'm envious and sometimes resentful of people without skin issues. I want peace of mind about my skin. I want to not think about it and look at others and say "I don't actually care" even though it's currently impossible for me not to. I also realized, that comments like this can actually be taken as a compliment rather than an indication to "stop complaining." My skin IS just fine. It's different, sure. But it doesn't define me. And it clearly isn't defining me to the people who make those comments, as they don't see what the big deal is. I guess what I'm trying to say is that perspective is everything. I can either choose to see the glass half empty and continue to be angry and upset by those comments or I can choose to not let it affect my day and instead use it as a morale booster. Either way, this journey I'm on is teaching me a lot about love and tolerance and most importantly acceptance. What about you? What's the most annoying thing you hear about acne and rosacea? More importantly, how do you let that frame what you think about yourself and others? ♡ A post shared by Kristin & Co.
