"As part of this trend, 'high' earlobe piercings [4], right at the tip of the earlobe close to the cartilage, are becoming really popular, and they are being worn without a 'traditional' second hole or even first lobe piercings. I love this trend because it gives the wearer the opportunity to keep it classic or get imaginative with their jewellery options, and in addition, it leaves room for whatever they may do next."

For the uninitiated, the helix area is a fancy word for your upper cartilage — a spot Brooks predicts will see a boost this Autumn. "We are seeing statement studs and clusters of multiple studs in the upper ear replace the more expected use of simple hoops around the edge of the helix," she said. "Some of these new piercings are placed in front of those hoops, and that is all the more awesome. They've started trickling in, and I hope that turns into a wave."

Piercing your rook area — aka the inner piece of cartilage above your tragus — is what Brooks calls a "little piercing secret" because its location means it won't snag on things and stays out of the way during the healing process.

"The jewellery can be basic, sparkly, fun, or classic, and it will still surprise anyone who catches a glimpse of that side of your head," she said. "I usually recommend these piercings to people who want to keep it conservative but interesting and also as a great placement location to people who want to be bold about their jewellery choice."

"Colour is making a comeback in a big way," Brooks said. "We're seeing people request more gemstone jewellery, particularly in moodier '70s tones, mixing and matching multiple shades for additional impact."
