Pixie Lott on Fake Nails, False Lashes, and Why She Can't Get Enough of the Festive Season

12/12/2019 - 04:05 PM

You don't have to know Pixie Lott [1] personally to tell she loves beauty. The singer/actor is never without a sharp cat eye or pair of fluffy false lashes, and while her signature platinum-blonde hair has remained the same since she came onto the scene in 2009, she endlessly experiments with different hairstyles, accessories, and accent colours — even launching her own range of temporary hair dyes that sold at Superdrug. She's also been the face of Kiss Nails and Lashes since 2017 — and not because it needed a celebrity to help sell its products. Lott is genuinely a longtime fan of the brand's press-on nails.

To celebrate the festive season, Kiss Nails threw a party at Restaurant Ours in London last week, with Lott as a special guest and performer — belting out her favourite Christmas tunes as attendees got treated to manicures, makeup touch-ups, and festive cocktails. Before she went on stage (wearing a set of holographic, pale pink Kiss Nails, of course), wet sat down with her to chat all things beauty — and why Christmas has to be, hands down, her favourite time of year.

POPSUGAR: It's clear through all of your past beauty looks and brand collaborations that you really, truly love beauty. Has that always been the case?

Pixie Lott: I've always loved it and loved looking for beauty inspiration. Right now I find it on Instagram, but even growing up, I would play with makeup and try out wild looks like blue eye shadow. And it's so fun that it comes with what I do — that I get to try different hair and makeup looks for my job basically.

PS: Where do you find your beauty inspiration these days? I know you mentioned Instagram . . .

PL: I love scrolling through Instagram and Pinterest. That's one of the amazing things about social media is all the makeup and beauty inspiration you can find. I know people always focus on the bad side of it, but there are some really great things about social media. I still look at magazines, I still buy Vogue every time it comes out.

I love a lot of the old stuff as well. Growing up, I always loved Edie Sedgwick and Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn, just the classic beauty icons. I always think it's fun to do a mix of that and find a way to make it feel different and modern day.

PS: For performances, do you do anything different with your hair and makeup than, say, a red carpet event?

PL: Yeah, I do it slightly different because, when I sing, I really eat the microphone; it's something I've always done and that won't ever change. When I first started out I tried singing [on stage] with bright red lipstick on and it just doesn't work; there are some pictures of me out there with red lipstick all over my face. So ever since that happened I avoid it and just focus on my eyes more, so that's why I love wearing lashes — tonight I'm wearing the Kiss Lash Couture Naked Drama Collection in Veil [2]. It also makes sense because when you're performing, people are looking at your eyes so it's important to keep the focus on them; your mouth is hidden by the microphone.

PS: You had your makeup done today, but have you mastered applying false lashes on yourself?

PL: I've gone through phases. When I first started out, I was really good at [putting them on], and then I lost my confidence with it — this was years ago. Then I did a play in 2016 where I was doing my own makeup for the show and I had eight performances a week, for an entire year, and every day I would put my lashes on, and I got so quick at it. I would get to the stage door and it would literally be, like, a few minutes before the show started, and I'd put my lashes on, do the liner, do the lip, and just get on the stage. Before that, it used to take me a while to place the lash strips, but now I can just pop them on.

PS: When do you feel most beautiful?

PL: I always think — and I don't mean to sound cheesy — that beauty comes from the inside, because, you know when you meet people and they're so beautiful but then you meet them and you get a different view? Or you meet someone who is just so friendly and warm that they're so beautiful to you? I guess I feel most beautiful when I'm with my family and friends, and when I feel happy — and I feel happiest when I'm performing and on stage.

PS: What are some of your favourite beauty spots in London?

PL: I go to Larry King Salon [3], and that's great for all things hair, obviously — I'm actually going there in the morning to get my colour done. Makeup-wise, the only thing that comes to mind is not in London — because I just got back from LA — is that amazing store Violet Grey [4]. It's so beautiful! All of the items they've chosen are so specific, and even the shop itself is just so stunning; I can't get it out of my head. I go get my facials at Therapie Clinic [5], which is on Wigmore Street, and I get the mango radiance peel, which is very hydrating; I go there every month.

PS: What do you love most about Christmas in London?

PL: I love Christmas in London. I love Christmas in general. I mean, I love Summer as well, but I was thinking this year, if I had to choose, Christmas beats it. There's a magic in the air, and everyone's excited, and I see the lights and the displays, especially in this part of London. I even love Christmas music, so I'm excited to be singing it tonight. I don't know why I just love the melodies! You know you also see your friends and your family, and reflect on the year . . . I even love the flavoured drinks you get at Starbucks [6] and the Christmas movies [7]. It's like an excuse for everything: you eat too much, you drink too much . . . I'm a bit of an advocate of Christmas!

You mentioned hair colour; how do you keep your blonde looking so shiny and healthy?

PL: When you're blonde, I do think it's important to look after it by doing treatments and Olaplex [8] and stuff like that, but usually I try and get away with waiting until I got to the salon where I can get a treatment in. But what's also been really great this year is that I've left my hair natural a lot. It's curly, and it helps the condition of it so much. When I'm getting it styled all the time, it does affect it, but over the Summer, I literally just left it to dry naturally with leave-in conditioner, and it's really made a difference.
