My Brows Are Living a Full Life Now, and It’s All Thanks to Selena Gomez's Rare Beauty

As you may already correctly assume, my very bold brows [1] seen in the picture here are not solely the hair that grew on my body [2]. Yet despite the fact that they are so full and dark [3], I also didn't get them with a jet-black product either.

I recently tested out the Brow Harmony Pencil & Gel from Selena Gomez's new brand, Rare Beauty [4] . . . but in a shade lighter than the hair on my head. While it's hard to tell from a photo, I actually found combining a dark-brown pencil with my nearly-black hair added depth with more softness than something inkier. I also loved the versatility a product with both a pencil and a gel spoolie tip, instead of needing to buy those two products separately. That's not all I loved, so keep reading to find out more.

The Two Sides of This Rare Beauty Brow Product's Story

It was definitely easy to get fine lines with the triangular tip of this Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez [5] Brow Harmony Pencil and Gel (as you can see on my hand). I used very little pressure to make them, but it's possible to get something darker by pressing down a bit harder with the creamy pencil.

On my face, I filled in my brows and defined their shape with this end. I used the shade Deep Brown [6], a bit lighter than my hair, which was much less harsh than the results I've seen with black pencils in the past. Also, by having a blend of colours, it looked less obvious where the fake hairs were drawn. The other tip is a spoolie, so I combed the tinted gel through after the pencil strokes. This added a hint of colour, but I loved how well it neatened up the (actual) hair, and set my brows in place.

I really appreciated that both of these options were included in the same colour with the same product. I can see myself using either end on its own in the future, too: I'd use the pencil to just fill in my brows (especially when I've had a lapse in waxing [7]) but, since my brows can get unruly, I'd use just the gel to slick them in place with a hint of colour as well.

My Brows Went From Untouched and Messy to Bold and Defined

Now I know full brows can be polarizing [8], but I was trying to see if a brown hue would look obviously light with my darker hair, so I applied the pencil with a firmer hand [9] and also added the gel for extra boldness.

From the before and after, I'm totally convinced I don't need a brow product that matches my hair exactly (and I think going lighter would also be softer on those with paler complexions and a bigger contrast between skin and hair colours, too). Plus, I can't make a black pencil look that much more subtle, even with a gentle touch, so I loved that I could get two shades from this one product so it's actually like three-in-one.

I'm not going back to black anytime soon, and I'm so happy that I tried this because I found a new friend in brown. Ahead, see all eight colours for yourself, and decide which is your future brow bestie.
