Sam Smith got a new tattoo with a very special meaning — a portrait to represent their nonbinary identity. The tattoo is on the singer's inner bicep and is a drawing of a person in heels and underwear looking in a full-length mirror. The ink was done by London-based tattoo artist Miles Langford, who shared a close-up of the work on Instagram on April 21, along with a few pictures with Smith. "ICON @samsmith," read Langford's caption. "Thanks for getting tattooed."

In 2019, Smith announced their pronouns are they/them in a thread on Twitter, which read, "Today is a good day so here goes. I've decided I am changing my pronouns to THEY/THEM ❤ after a lifetime of being at war with my gender I've decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and out..." In a second tweet, they added: "I'm so excited and privileged to be surrounded by people that support me in this decision but I've been very nervous about announcing this because I care too much about what people think but f*ck it!"
