Shedid & Parrish's Curly-Hair-Care Line Helped Me Achieve My First Successful, Silky Twist-Out

25/03/2021 - 04:44 PM

Shedid & Parrish [1] is the only curly-hair-care line that you'll ever need — no, seriously. I used the entire product range for one week, and all of a sudden, I was able to achieve my first successful twist-out [2] (by my standards, at least). Even my wash-and-gos lasted up to three days, which is revolutionary given my lazy Afro hair sleeping habits. The best part about Shedid & Parrish? It's completely natural, vegan, unscented, and recyclable — and it's specifically formulated for curly, coily, and Afro-textured hair.

"I've struggled just to find the right products, the right stylist, and the right information for such a long time," Shedid & Parrish founder Jessica Parrish told POPSUGAR. "I'm mixed race and adopted, so hair comes from all sorts, who knows where? My parents didn't really know how to look after it, and I went through lots of trial and error . . . Fast forward 30 odd years, and I still didn't see a clear market of products for curls on the high street. It's still quite difficult, and that's really why I wanted to create the brand. I just wanted something that was simple, really clear to understand, and that was for curls. So it doesn't matter if you've got a light curl or a tight curl, or a this or a that. If you've got curly hair, this is for you."

At first glance, I was impressed by the eco-conscious packaging, then once I opened the containers and the scent of absolutely nothing hit my nose, I knew this product line was something special. Everyone is different, but I personally really don't like smelling like a caricature of a Black girl — coconut or tropical scents seem to be the default of most products targeted at Black women and girls. Then, once I started using the products, my respect went up another notch because unlike most curly-hair products, Shedid & Parrish actually goes into detail about how you should use each product. Not everyone knows hair-care tricks like blasting your coils with cold water at the end of a wash to boost shine and lock in moisture or how and which type of products to use in the specific order to ensure your twist-outs and wash-and-gos come out flawless — founder Parrish covered these steps in the formulation and packaging of her products.

Ahead, check out my full, honest review of the entire Shedid & Parrish [3] curly-hair-care product line.

Shedid & Parrish Deep Cleansing Shampoo

The Shedid & Parrish Deep Cleansing Shampoo [4] (£22) is a clear, scent-free, foamy, and clarifying hair cleanser made with tara fruit and sunflower extract that detoxifies your hair without drying it out. My hair and scalp felt really clean after using this, and it emulsified into a rich lather without using too much of the product.

Shedid & Parrish Deep Cleansing Shampoo

For people with curly and Afro hair, the deep condition is the most important thing in your hair-care-product lineup because it creates a smooth, moisturising base for whatever style you're trying out that day. The Shedid & Parrish Deep Cleansing Conditioner [5] (£27) is absolutely beautiful because it's made with ingredients that I believe to be the best oils and butters for multitextured hair — olive oil, castor-seed oil, and shea butter. It deeply moisturised my coils and kinks while having enough slip to easily detangle in the shower — which is basically my standard of how good a deep conditioner is. I've used literally dozens of deep conditioners, and I can honestly say this is in the top three best that I have ever used.

Shedid & Parrish Silky Leave In Conditioner

The Shedid & Parrish Silky Leave In Conditioner [6] (£27) is a similar cocktail of ingredients to the luscious deep conditioner but much lighter for use on the daily or when you need a boost in hydration between washes. I love this leave-in and use it as a base when doing a wash-and-go or to refresh my coils. Between washes, I dampen my hair and run this product through to rehydrate and then finger coil with the Shedid & Parrish Curl Styler to give extra definition — which lasts up to three days for me.

Shedid & Parrish Curl Styler

The Shedid & Parrish Curl Styler [7] (£29) is your perfect partner for a wash-and-go, especially for looser curl types. It's made with avocado, jojoba, coconut oil, and shea butter, with some tara fruit and sunflower extract. It's like a hybrid between a curl gel and a curl cream with all the nourishment of a cream and the hold of a gel but absolutely no crunchy toughness. I love using this product right after I get out of the shower and my hair is still a bit damp. I apply the curly styler to lengths and ends, detangle with a Denman brush, and touch up the ends with a bit of finger coiling using the Shedid & Parrish Curl Control Serum.

Shedid & Parrish Afro Butter

If you have tighter type 4 curls, you are going to love the Shedid & Parrish Afro Butter [8] (£29). It's made with coconut oil and shea butter, and as someone who never believed coconut oil would work for my hair type, I was really surprised with how much my hair soaked up this product. Using the Afro Butter was honestly the first time I was able to actually achieve a decent twist-out. It's wonderfully rich but not too heavy or greasy, and it really feels like it was specifically designed for twist-outs or doing sleek styles like a bun, braids, or a ponytail.

Shedid & Parrish Curl Control Serum

The Shedid & Parrish Curl Control Serum [9] (£28) is so unique, it's like a shine serum with a slight tacky feel. If you use hot tools on your hair, this is the perfect serum to apply as a primer or finisher to boost the shine of your final look, protect against heat and humidity, and slightly hold your style for a longer wear time. The Shedid & Parrish Curl Control Serum is made with tara fruit and sunflower extract, and I use it to finish off my twist-outs and braids-outs or add a boost of gloss to my wash-and-gos.
