You may not know what "skinimalism" is, but you've probably seen it before, either on your social media feeds or your friends. Ever since Pinterest deemed it the "new glow-up" [1] in its 2021 Trend Predictions Report [2], it's been a reoccurring trend year after year.
Skinimalism marries makeup and skin care for the best of both worlds. It's a new wave of natural, minimal or no-makeup beauty looks where your real skin — texture, pores, blemishes [3], discolouration, and all — shines through. It may not be a completely novel concept, but in a world where photo-retouching [4] and the idea of "perfect skin" are still very prevalent, it's a sign that many people want to move away from those unrealistic beauty standards.

Pinterest's 2021 report saw the search for "how to get glowing skin naturally" increase by four times year over year, and "natural everyday makeup" saw a 180 percent spike. And interest in the topic has only grown since then. Over the last few years, we've seen a strong return of minimal beauty trends [7] across the board.
According to the 2024 skin-care trend predictions released by board-certified dermatologists from U.S. Dermatology Partners [8], "skin minimalism," as they're calling it, is on the rise. This trend abides by the less-is-more mindset and highlights the importance of a simple yet effective skin-care routine.

Does this mean that the days of graphic eyeliner and a full face beat are over, or that we'll never perform a 10-step at-home facial ever again? Not even close. But it does mean that people are craving a way to enhance what they've already got with makeup and skin-care products rather than cover it up. That's a trend we can get behind.
