There's a Major Hair Change to Look Out For in Spider-Man: No Way Home

17/12/2021 - 02:35 PM

Spider-Man: No Way Home hits theatres on 17 Dec., but you probably already knew that. The movie buzz has been impossible to miss with the countless spoilers [1], stylish (and steamy [2]) red carpet moments [3], and fun behind-the-scenes cast photos. Peter Parker, MJ, and Ned pick up right where they left off in Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Because this film is part of a trilogy — a very well-known trilogy, may we add — you won't be seeing any drastic changes in the hair and makeup department. There's a good reason for that: "When you do these franchises and you do these iconic characters, usually the studios want you to stay in line with the characters," Linda Flowers [4], the film's hair department head, told POPSUGAR.

Still, that's not to say everything is the same. Flowers made some strategic alterations with a few of the characters in the film to help tell the next chapter of the story. "[Almost] everybody's just getting a little bit of an upgrade," she said — and she's sharing more details about each one ahead.

Why Tom Holland's Stunt Doubles Wore Wigs

Holland has not one, but two stunt doubles, and they're both his friends: one specialises in gymnastics and the other in martial arts. In order to ensure you couldn't tell them apart when they're on camera, Flowers "had to make both [stunt doubles'] hair look just like Tom's." Wigs as well as "a lot of [hair] colour" and some expert hair-cutting techniques were all utilised to pull it off.

Speaking of wigs: the stunt doubles aren't the only ones wearing them. Angourie Rice, the actor who plays Betty Brant, got a major bob haircut before filming Spider-Man: Far From Home, which, despite looking amazing on her, wasn't the style the hair department had in mind — so they had to outfit her in a wig as well.

The Secret to Zendaya's Signature MJ Hairstyle

MJ has a signature hairstyle throughout the trilogy that's more or less Zendaya [5]'s natural hair — which was entirely intentional. "[Her personal stylist] wants her to not look overly done; like she's just really natural," said Flowers. "So they're lucky because they can kind of just let her hair be what it is." The only thing they tweaked: "We had to bump up her hair colour a little bit because it had changed [from the original]."

Flash Thompson Underwent the Biggest Hair Transformation

Flash Thompson (played by Tony Revolori) wins for most noticeable beauty transformation in Spider-Man: No Way Home. "I wanted to change their images a little bit and make them a little bit more hip, which is what we did to the guy who plays Flash," said Flowers. "We bleached out his hair and gave him some platinum and a little blond." The newfound fame that Flash and the rest of Peter's friends are thrust into now that everyone knows who Spider-Man is is the motivating factor for his new look. Now that everyone knows the truth, "all of a sudden their popularity changes."

The person you will most definitely not be seeing with a new hairstyle anytime soon is Peter. "He's supposed to be who he is no matter what," said Flowers.

The One Hair Product That's Used on Everyone

There's one hair product that's used on everyone from Zendaya [6] to Benedict Cumberbatch and Jacob Batalon: Hask Argan Oil Repairing Shine Hair Oil [7] ($7). Flowers said just a little bit adds "texture, separation, and shine" to every hairstyle. "It helps with the humidity, it helps keep the ends healthy," she said. "Especially shooting in Atlanta where it can be humid, it really gave me a lot of control."

The best part: it's under $10 and can be found at the drugstore.
