I Tested the Viral 5-Minute Makeup Hack From TikTok to See If It Really Works, and Whoa

I usually enjoy the process of doing my makeup [1], but I'm not going to sit here and tell you that there aren't days where I wish I could snap my fingers and have a full face done in seconds. On those days I'm always looking for shortcuts to get my makeup done as fast as possible. Enter: the makeup hack [2] from TikTok that sees you putting on all of your face products at once [3] and blending them together with a damp sponge.

Everyone that I saw trying this trick on the app was blown away by how easy — and most importantly, quick — the process was. Unlike some TikTok beauty hacks [4] that fall flat when put to the test by multiple people, this one seemed to be a hit every time. So, on a day when I only had one Zoom meeting that I really didn't feel like getting ready for, I decided to give it a try.

The key here is to use cream or liquid makeup products for every step — powders won't do. I grabbed the TLB Ivory Caffeine Concealer [5] ($15) for under my eyes; Pur 4-in-1 Sculpting Concealer [6] ($22) to cover blemishes; Tower 28 Bronzino [7] ($20) to contour my cheeks, temples, and jawline; Hourglass Vanish Blush Stick [8] ($46) for my cheeks; and About-Face Light Lock Stick [9] ($20) for the high points of my face (cheekbones, eyebrow bone, and nose).

With only sunscreen on my face, I applied my products in the same order I always do: concealer, bronzer, blush, and highlighter. With all of the different pigments on my face at once, it looked a little silly, but I was a believer it'd turn out OK. I sprayed my face with the Urban Decay All Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Setting Spray [10] ($33), which supposedly helps all of the products blend together, and used a damp makeup sponge to get to work.

So far, the entire application process was only about three minutes long — I timed it. The blending portion was similarly easy, although my contour took a little bit of extra effort to make it smooth. By the time that was done, my timer read two minutes. To finish things off I applied some brow gel (Kosas Air Brow Tinted Volumizing Eyebrow Gel [11] ($20)) and mascara (Roen Beauty Cake Mascara [12] ($28)).

Although I never had any doubts, I was seriously impressed with the final result. Everything looked even and blended, but my cheekbones were still defined and my blush visible. All said and done the makeup hack took five minutes, and I'm not sure that I'll ever apply my products one at a time again.
