We consider ourselves to be pretty well-versed in the world of nail art. (I personally follow more manicurists and nail inspiration accounts on Instagram than I do my own friends — don't judge.) But we had never seen velvet nails before we spotted them on LA-based manicurist Amy Le's account in December.
Le posted a video of the dreamy, shimmery manicure and dubbed it "green velvet." The best part? The velvet trend is actually easier to recreate than it looks. Simply put, this ultraglittery effect is achieved through cat eye nail polish. Remember the cat eye design? Often seen with a lightning bolt look through a glitter polish. For the velvet trend, though, the magnet is carefully taken from the bottom of the finger and swooped in an upwards motion four times: at the tip of your nail, both sides, and base of your nail. Doing this creates a supersparkly inside of the nail and less glittery sides, so that when shone in sunlight, your manicure will become multi-dimensional and appear almost velvet-like.
After doing some digging, we discovered even more velvet nail art inspiration. They have a texture to them that looks exactly like the fabric — you can almost imagine how soft they feel. They work on acrylic and natural nails, and come in a range of colours.
