I Own Over 20 Red Lipsticks, but This One Beats Them All

The amount of lipsticks [2]that I own is a little ridiculous, I can fully admit that. This fact does not, however, deter me from trying every possible formula [3] that I can get my hands on to find the best of the best on the market. One of my favourite colours to test is red due to how incredibly different one single shade of red lipstick [4] can look on various skin tones. However, only a handful of red lipsticks have been worth the roller coaster of emotions that this quest has sent me on.

While on YouTube one day, I came across a brand called Violette FR. Created by makeup artist Violette Serrat [5], this brand encompasses her effortlessly chic and minimal makeup style. One of the staple products? A red lipstick in the shade Amour Fou. The Petal Bouche Matte Lipstick [6] ($25) lipstick claims to not only be universal but, with its matte formula, to also mimic the velvety texture of a rose petal. Intrigued, I had to try it out.

The lipstick is housed in a sleek, clear tube and white cap, with the brand's logo embossed on the top of the cap in gold. Something that surprised me about the product immediately was the doe-foot applicator — instead of the traditional design, this one was pinched and slimmer.

When I first opened the tube, I did have to take a considerable amount of product off of the applicator, which got a bit messy, so I wouldn't apply this lipstick if I was in a rush or on the go, as it takes a bit of concentration.

The pinched doe foot, I came to find, was perfect for using the applicator as a faux lip liner. It was the perfect size to easily get into the curves of my lips without having the lipstick feather. Once applied, it didn't take very long for the lipstick to dry down, and I was left with the soft, velvety finish promised by the brand. It was matte yet lightweight, and using the product as a lip liner darkened the edges of the lipstick, creating a subtle ombré. There was very minimal transfer after the lipstick dried, but when I ate lunch, the formula did rub off, so I wouldn't consider it a long-wearing formula.

In all, I enjoyed this lipstick and I will be repurchasing it when I run out. The Petal Bouche Matte formula makes the product wear comfortably on the lips, and using the applicator as a lip liner gave it a nice lived-in look. The colour itself is the perfect shade of red that doesn't pull too yellow or pink on my skin tone. While this red is the only colour currently available in this formula, I'm keeping an eye out for more shades to come.
