Last night's Oscars saw numerous beauty looks take centre stage. Besides the middle part, another surprising hair trend dominating the red carpet: "wet" hairstyles.
Unlike "liquid" hair that looks shiny and healthy, celebrities took a more literal approach to this slick trend — wearing hairstyles that looked dripping wet both at the Oscars and at afterparties. While these were some pretty fancy occasions that probably took hours to prepare for, "wet" hairstyles are actually great in a pinch. "If you're usually in a rush in the morning, then wet styles are the way to go," Anabel Santos, hairstylist at Sally Hershberger NoMad Salon, previously told POPSUGAR.
Stars who took part in the trend include "Euphoria"'s Hunter Schafer, who arrived at the Vanity Fair Oscars party with her chin-length hair slicked close to her scalp; Kourtney Kardashian, who graced the Oscars red carpet with her hair combed back completely, leaving the ends spiky and slightly curled; and Kim Kardashian, who combined the best of both worlds — donning a sleek high ponytail with scrunched ends to make her hair look freshly towel-dried.
Quite a few other celebrities decided to take part in the "wet"-look hair trend, so we rounded up the best looks of the night ahead.
Naomi Scott's Wet Hair Look
Naomi Scott's hairstylist Bridget Bager says the duo decided on a "deep side part with a really sleek, high shine, almost wet look and kept the ends a little textured to keep it from looking too much like a helmet." After brushing Scott's hair into place, Badger went in with "a gel and cream mixture and raked it into her hair to create a hydrated, wet look."
Ciara's Wet Hair Look
Ciara's version of the hairstyle, saw the star in "long liquid waves" created by celebrity hairstylist César DeLeön Ramîrez. To create the style, Ramîrez started "on towel scrunched, damp hair," he says, as this allows the natural hair texture to reveal itself. He then used the UNITE 7SECONDS Detangler ($32) "to help maintain the hydration in the hair"
and layered UNITE's U Oil ($46) and ELEVATE Mousse ($29) with hair gel to hold the texture. Lastly, to seal, he sprayed SESSION-MAX ($31) strong-hold hairspray.
To complete the look he used "a blow dryer and diffuser on a low setting until [her hair] was dry but still looked super wet," Ramîrez says.
Hunter Schafer's Wet Hair Look
Schafer's look was inspired by her love of anime "where you often see interesting haircuts that have multiple lengths, such as long tendrils that cascade to add a dramatic effect," says her hairstylist Rena Calhoun. The duo wanted to give drama for the Oscars look, and Shafer's dress "gave us room to explore."
Kourtney Kardashian's Wet Hair Look
Kourtney Kardashian's wet hairstyle had a similar finish to Scott's, as the reality-TV star also donned a deep side part and flipped ends for her look.
Kim Kardashian's Wet Hair Look
Kim Kardashian and Chris Appleton teamed up once more for the Vanity Fair after party and her sleek, wet ponytail was the perfect execution of the trend.
To start, Appleton used the Colour Wow One Minute Transformation Cream ($24) and applied it all throughout Kardashian's hair. Then, he applied the Colour Wow Pop + Lock Frizz Control and Glossing Serum ($20) directly onto a Tangle Teezer the Ultimate Detangler brush ($14) to evenly disperse product through the pony and give a silky detangled finish to the hair. This, he says, will give you the "perfect controlled wet look."
