6 Winter Makeup Trends That Will Totally Shake Up Your Beauty Routine

16/11/2022 - 07:35 AM

When the temperature starts to drop, you can guarantee two things will happen: our lipstick shades get darker, and our skin-care formulas get richer to accommodate for the drier climate. Aside from that, it's always a gamble as to what beauty trends will come out on top. Much of the season is dominated by the holidays — it influences our nail art [3], our hair accessories [4], and our makeup choices – but after the holidays are all said and done, a select few trends stick around to carry us through the duration of the season.

Whenever we want to get the scoop on the season's upcoming trends, we turn to the pros, which is exactly what we did to find out what lies ahead in the makeup world for the winter of 2022. "The holidays are officially here, and the makeup trends coming up this season will be bold but also be able to withstand the rest of time," professional makeup artist Jaleesa Jaikaran [5] tells POPSUGAR.

This winter you can expect lots of glitter, graphic eyeliner, and hydrated skin, but that's only the beginning. Keep reading for more on the top winter makeup trends of the year.

2022 Winter Makeup Trend: Glitter Shadow

By now you probably know that the festive season is synonymous with glitter, and this year it'll be no different. Make sure to load up on your favourite glitters and shimmery pigments, because you will be seeing 3D eyes everywhere. "Multidimensional eyes are trending for the holidays as people are experimenting more with textures, glitters, and colours," Jaikaran says. "Whether it's chunky glitter or bronzy, light-reflecting shimmers, this winter will find eye makeup looks that are all about lid embellishments."

Shop the look: Glitter eyeshadows are notoriously messy, but the 24 7 Moondust Shadow in Space Cowboy [7] (£18) from Urban Decay is anything but. The pressed pigment will give you some next-level shine. If you prefer a traditional loose glitter, the NYX Professional Makeup Metallic Glitter [8] (£6) eyeshadows twinkle and shine no matter if you want a more subtle eye or a full-on disco ball on your eyelid.

2022 Winter Makeup Trend: Colourful Underliner

If you prefer a more subtle eye enhancement, then the underliner trend [9] with a pop of colour will be for you. "The lower lash line has been getting some love this season," Jaikaran says. "Many are opting to go beyond the traditional liner look and instead are opting for a combination of coloured shadows being buffed into the bottom-lash area of the eye."

Shop the look: If you struggle with getting colour on your lower lashes to stay in place, opt for a coloured eyeliner instead of a traditional eyeshadow. MAC Cosmetics's Colour Excess Gel Pencil Eye Liner [10] (£19) comes in fun colours like yellow emerald and cobalt blue — plus they're also pigmented and long wearing. They're the perfect product to get you through those festive photo sessions and dinners with your eye makeup still fully intact.

2022 Winter Makeup Trend: Bold Lips

"A bold colour on the lips will forever be a winter favourite that is here to stay, especially this season," Jaikaran says. If you're looking for a winter lip that will easily transition you into the festive season, there are a few colours she has been seeing more frequently with her clients: "Blue-toned pinks and deep reds always bring about such a nostalgic moment. No matter who is wearing them, these colours in particular always look beautiful and so sultry."

Shop the look: For a perfect shade of red on any skin tone, we like Fenty Beauty Stunna Lip Paint Longwear Fluid Lip Colour in Uncensored [11] (£22) or Maybelline's Super Stay Matte Ink Liquid Lipstick [12] (£10). For your perfect pink, try Pat McGrath's MattTrance Lipstick in Full Panic [13] (£36).

2022 Winter Makeup Trend: "Glazed" Skin

You've probably noticed that most people have taken a step back from the full-coverage look that was prevalent last winter, focusing on a subtle "glazed" look [14] instead — and there's a reason for that. "Skin that looks hydrated — not glassy — will definitely be trending this winter," Jaikaran says. "This skin technique mimics healthy-looking skin and gives people the option to add extra coverage to only the places that need it, instead of putting on a full face and even more 'glossy' highlighting products on top of it."

That being said, regardless of how you like to do your base makeup, hydrated skin is really all about the preparation steps that you take before doing your base routine. Instead of using only a primer, when it comes to hydrated skin, opt for layering richer moisturisers and creams that can double as the first steps of your pre-makeup routine as well as skin care.

Shop the look: The Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré Daily Face and Body Cream [15] (£13) is beloved for a reason: it acts as a face primer and moisturiser in one and deeply sinks into the skin to provide lasting moisture. Another of our favourites is the Tatcha Dewy Skin Cream [16] (£63).

2022 Winter Makeup Trend: Graphic Eyeliner

Treat this winter like the graphic-liner Olympics — because it basically will be. "Graphic liners will continue to trend throughout the winter season because of the sheer wow factor that they often create," Jaikaran says. When it comes to your winter liner, think: siren eyes, fishtail liners, or even a fun banana liner. No matter what you decide to go with, there is simply no wrong answer. "A precise liquid liner will always be a moment," Jaikaran says.

Shop the look: Not only do Stila's Stay All Day Dual-Ended Waterproof Liquid Eye Liners [17] (£22) come in multiple colours, but they also feature dual-ended tips — one of which boasts an extra-fine point, which makes for extremely precise detail work.
