What's Old Is New: Proof That 2019 Is Basically Just 2006 All Over Again

This year has been one big nostalgic trip for kids who grew up in the early 2000s [1]. Old shows and movies are getting rebooted left and right [2], our favourite bands are reuniting [3], and some of the biggest fashion trends [4] from back in the day are suddenly cool again. In fact, 2019 is basically 2006 all over again, albeit with a few slight modifications. Don't believe me? Take a look at some of the biggest pop culture moments from 2006 and see how history is repeating itself.

2006: The Jonas Brothers Got Their Big Break

In 2006, the Jonas Brothers released their debut studio album, It's About Time, with Columbia Records. Though they were eventually dropped by the label in early 2007, they went on to sign with Hollywood Records shortly after and quickly become one of the biggest music groups at the time.

2019: The Jonas Brothers Got the Band Back Together

Though the band split in 2013, earlier this year they announced that they were reuniting [5] for a brand new album with Republic Records. Their first single "Sucker [6]" was a huge hit with fans and debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 [7], making it the Jonas Brothers' first number-one song. Their fifth album, Happiness Begins [8], comes out in June followed by their much-anticipated tour [9] this Summer.

2006: Cargo Pants Were All Over the Red Carpet

Remember when all your favourite celebrities would pair their midriff-baring top with a pair of baggy khaki pants? Every red carpet event you would see another star in cargo pants.

2019: Cargo Pants Are All Over the Runway

Interestingly enough, the cargo pants craze is back in style. It must be all those handy pockets for storage! The trend has taken over the fashion world, namely the runway. Cargo pants were all the rage during the Spring '19 runways [10], including Gigi Hadid's look during the Fendi show in Milan, and since then, they've been one of the biggest fashion trends of 2019 [11].

2006: Aly & AJ Just Released Their Debut Album

In 2005, the singing sister duo released their first album, Into the Rush, through Hollywood Records. At the time, Aly was still starring on Disney Channel's Phil of the Future. The album was eventually rereleased in August 2006, with three new songs, including their hit "Chemicals React."

2019: Aly & AJ Just Released Their EP, Sanctuary

In May 2019, Aly & AJ released Sanctuary through their independent label Aly & AJ Music LLC. The EP was a follow-up to their 2017 EP, Ten Years, which was their first release in ten years under the name Aly & AJ.

2006: Miley Cyrus Rose to Fame as Hannah Montana

Remember when Miley Cyrus [20] was best known as her alter ego, Hannah Montana? In 2006, the actress quickly rose to fame with her hit Disney Channel series about a normal teenager living a double life as a pop singer. During the show's four-season run, Miley began to release her own music under Hollywood Records, including her debut album, Meet Miley Cyrus, which was part of a double album with the soundtrack for Hannah Montana season two.

Though Miley has put Hannah in her past, this year she made fans really nostalgic when she cut and dyed her hair exactly like the Disney Channel character [21]. She really embraced her roots by singing along to some of her biggest hits [22], including "Best of Both Worlds." While there's no word on whether Hannah Montana will make a comeback, Miley has been teasing new music [23] for the end of May.

2006: Supernatural Just Finished Its First Season

In May 2006, Supernatural season one had just wrapped up on The WB. Though the series received mixed reactions [24] during its first season, it eventually became a staple on The CW.

2019: Supernatural Announced Its 15th and Final Season

After becoming The CW's longest running show ever and gaining a massive fandom, this year, the series announced that it was officially ending [25] with its upcoming 15th season. It really is the end of an era!

2006: Tie Dye Was So Hot

Back in the early 2000s, tie dye was one of the hottest fashion trends, worn by celebrities like Paris Hilton [26], Hilary Duff [27], and Gwen Stefani [28].

2019: Tie Dye Is So Cool

Now, tie dye is popping up again [29] with celebrities like Beyoncé, Taylor Swift [30], and Gigi Hadid wearing the print in bright pastels colours.

Taylor's country music days [31] seem like FOREVER ago. In 2006, released her debut single (yes, her very first single), "Tim McGraw [32]," with Big Machine Records. Her debut album, titled Taylor Swift [33], released later that year. Taylor was 16 at the time.

Flash-forward 13 years later, Taylor is now a full-fledged pop star and coming back on the music scene yet again. Following her sixth album, Reputation, Taylor released her brand new single "ME! 2006: Backstreet Boys Just Made Their Big Music Comeback

Following a nearly three-year hiatus, the Backstreet Boys released their comeback album Never Gone in 2005. The group then embarked on their Never Gone Tour, which ended in February 2006. That year, Kevin Richardson announced his plans to leave the group. He later rejoined BSB in 2012.

The series is set to launch later this year.

2006: All That Just Finished Its 10-Season Run

The Nickelodeon series first premiered in 1994, and ran for 10 seasons until its cancelation in 2005. The sketch comedy helped bolster the careers of actors like Kenan Thompson, Kel Mitchell, Amanda Bynes [47], and Jamie Lynn Spears [48].

2019: All That Is Getting Rebooted

In February 2019, Nickelodeon announced that it was reviving the beloved series [49], with original stars Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell as executive producers. The show is set to premiere on June 15 with the Jonas Brothers as guest-stars [50].
