On Saturday night, some of Hollywood's best directors descended on the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Hollywood in celebration of the 71st annual Directors Guild of America Awards. A Star Is Born director Bradley Cooper and BlacKkKlansman director Spike Lee were in attendance and also spoke at a panel for the event. But, apparently, this wasn't the first time the two have shared a conversation. During the panel — which also featured Vice's Adam McKay, Green Book's Peter Farrelly, and Roma's Alfonso Cuaron — Bradley recalled auditioning for Spike a decade ago.

"You get a chance to read for Spike Lee, you're never going to forget that," Bradley said. He then explained just how polite Spike was before his audition swiftly went down the drain. "You said, 'Hello, how are you?' You asked me about Philly. I did the thing, and you got me out quick," he added before the audience erupted in laughter. Even Spike couldn't hold in his chuckling as he quipped back, "Next!"

Neither Bradley nor Spike could remember what the audition was exactly for, but the silver lining is that they've both clearly done well for themselves since then, and there are no hard feelings. That same night at the DGA show, Bradley accepted the feature film nomination medallion for A Star Is Born, while Spike also accepted a nomination award for BlacKkKlansman.

It's a rather exciting award season for the two visionaries as they're currently up for Oscars. Bradley was nominated in the best actor and best adapted screenplay categories for his work in A Star Is Born as well as best original song for lending his vocals to "Shallow," alongside Lady Gaga. The film is also in the running for best picture, best achievement in cinematography, and best achievement in sound mixing. Meanwhile, Spike is nominated for best director and best adapted screenplay for his work in BlacKkKlansman.

But the Oscars aren't until Feb. 24, so let's just enjoy Bradley and Spike's big night at the DGA awards. View photos of them at the event ahead!
