On Monday, Cynthia Nixon posted a very special reunion snap on her Instagram account [3]. In the photo, the actress is cuddled up to her longtime friend and former Sex and the City costar Sarah Jessica Parker. "Old friends ran into each other at a @tmagazine shoot today," Cynthia wrote, then, "miss you @sarahjessicaparker" with a heart emoji. The photo is, of course, dear and heartwarming by itself. But consider the context: given the fact that Sarah is in a heated ongoing feud with Kim Cattrall [4], is it possible Cynthia is quietly picking sides?
This drama with Kim first flared back up in September 2017, when the plans for a third Sex and the City movie fell through [5]; according to reports, Kim was the final holdout and refused to sign a contract. As it turns out, the drama was the culmination of a long-standing behind-the-scenes beef [6] that had seemingly been going on ever since the women worked together on the iconic HBO TV show. More recently, Kim lashed out [7] when Sarah offered condolences in the wake of the tragic death of Kim's brother [8], Chris. Last week, Jason Lewis (who played Samantha's boyfriend Smith Jerrod on SATC) weighed in on the feud [9] and seemed to be siding with Sarah. Now, we have Cynthia's snap.
Of course, we can't say for sure that Cynthia is throwing her hat in the ring on Sarah's behalf. Maybe it really was just a little "I love you" message after a happenstance run-in. But you have to admit that such a public display of love for Sarah, in this particular moment in time, makes a statement. Then again, Cynthia did reach out to Kim with condolences [10] after Chris's death as well, and Kim even responded warmly. Maybe Cynthia is just trying to remain neutral by supporting both sides, which is such a Miranda thing to do, you know?
