The former first lady stopped by The Late Show With Stephen Colbert [3] on Dec. 1 to promote her new memoir, Becoming [4], and revealed a few lesser-known details about her marriage — including how the 44th president proposed in the first place.
Sure, fans may know that Barack proposed to Michelle [5] over dinner at a Chicago restaurant. But were you aware that they were actually in the middle of a debate about marriage when he popped the question? Under the guise of celebrating his completed bar exam, Barack baited Michelle into an argument by telling her he wasn't sure about tying the knot.
"He picks a fight, and so I deliver, because I too am a lawyer and I have my points to be made," Michelle told Stephen during the interview. "And by then, dessert was coming out and the waiter put a platter in front of me with a little box, with a ring on it."
