Recap Of Secret Diary Of A Call Girl Episode Five Which Aired On ITV2 On Thursday 2 October

Pop Watch: Secret Diary Of A Call Girl, Season Two, Ep. Five

So it all gets pretty intense in this week's installment of Secret Diary of a Call Girl. Without wanting to give too much away, there's a big revelation for one of the regular characters, and the aftershocks are devastating for another. The episode is Bambi-less which is a shame, as I've been intrigued about her character since episode three. I never thought I'd say it, but bring back Bambi next week please!

Episode five begins much like episode four, with Belle in bed with young attractive Alex, but this time she's thinking that she'll tell him the truth about her profession today. Alex wakes up and wanders around the flat swearing, which is totally random but funny! Staying true to her word, Belle asks Alex if he'd like to finally visit her place that afternoon, but he's working so they'll have to do it the next day instead. He then invites her to his boss's party that weekend, but Belle says she'll have to wait and see. Looks like she's veering between wanting to be open, and being concerned about the relationship getting so serious. This has got to all end in tears, hasn't it?

To read my thoughts on the rest of the episode just read more.

  • Belle meets Ben on the driving range and chats about Alex, so these two must have made nice after last week's row. Belle explains that she wants to tell Alex the truth because she's tired of lying: it makes her feel like she's looking through a telescope the wrong way round, with everyone too far away. As this series progresses I'm feeling more and more sympathy for Belle, because of moments like this where she expresses her loneliness.
  • Back at her flat, Belle is looking at Delia cookery books in preparation for Alex visiting the next day. She's also preparing for her first client in 10 days, who is a young man in a wheelchair whose dad has brought him to see her. The dad goes to wait in the van and Belle gets a text from Alex asking for her flat number, which she texts back to him saying see you tomorrow. She also leaves the door on the latch, for when her client's dad comes back up. I'm screaming at the TV at this point, saying: "you fool Belle, Alex is obviously on his way round, argh!"
  • Belle's client is finding it difficult, as he's not used to being touched in that way. He doesn't want Belle to behave like a porn star, because she won't seem like a real girl to him. They talk about his difficulties and he explains that falling in love and having a relationship feels like something that happens to other people. Belle obviously knows this only too well, so she tells him her real name and they start to get down to it. But what's this? Somebody walking in on them? Surely not ...

  • I'm afraid so, and shock horror it's Alex. While his initial reaction is probably to think that Belle/Hannah is having an affair, it becomes clear what's going on when her client says she should have told him if she had another client due. Alex storms out. Oh dear.
  • Alex heads to Ben's work and has a huge go at him, accusing Ben of laughing behind his back. Ben is surprisingly calm about it, and tries to help Belle/Hannah out by explaining that it's not who she is, it's just her job. Alex remembers then that Hannah introduced herself as Belle at the hotel when they first met, and realises she thought he was a client, saying it's disgusting and disgraceful. Fair enough, the guy's going to be shocked, but I do not like the way he reacts at all. He then accuses Ben of being in love with Belle, and says poor Vanessa. I'd rather Belle was with Ben than Alex, what about you?
  • Belle has been trying to call Alex, but he won't answer her calls (no surprise there), so she takes a cab over to see Ben, no doubt for advice. When she pulls up she sees Alex there, so she asks the taxi man to drive on. We see her crying and looking devastated. Billie Piper is superb in this episode: I think it's her best performance of the season.
  • The episode ends with Alex turning up at Belle's flat. He says he wants to check it's true, and then throws her things on the floor and storms out. I have no idea how this is going to play out over the remaining episodes. I think Alex will probably realise the error of his ways, but will it be too late? Will Belle and Ben realise they're meant to be together?

So there's my recap and opinion on the fifth episode. What are your thoughts?
