Look Back at the Photos From Archie Mountbatten-Windsor's Royal Christening
On a Saturday, 6 July 2019 in Windsor, members of the British royal family and close friends of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle gathered for the christening of Archie Mountbatten-Windsor, two months after his birth. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex decided to keep the ceremony private, choosing the tiny Private Chapel at Windsor Castle, which is worlds away from the grandeur of the castle's more famous St. George's Chapel, where the couple married in 2018. However, they did release some official photos on Instagram that gave us a glimpse of this important royal occasion.
In one picture, Harry and Meghan pose with members of their family including the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall, Princess Diana's sisters, Sarah McCorquodale and Jane Fellowes, and Meghan's mother, Doria Ragland. The second black-and-white snapshot shows Meghan and Harry cuddling up with Archie.
"Their Royal Highnesses feel fortunate to have enjoyed this day with family and the godparents of Archie," the caption reads. "The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are so happy to share the joy of this day with members of the public who have been incredibly supportive since the birth of their son. They thank you for your kindness in welcoming their first born and celebrating this special moment."
Harry and Meghan decided not to officially release the names of Archie's godparents, though this hasn't stopped there being plenty of speculation as to who they may be. The focus is on close friends of the couple like Meghan's BFF Jessica Mulroney, Harry's longtime friend Charlie Van Straubenzee and Meghan's friends Genevieve Hillis and Lindsay Roth, who accompanied the duchess to Wimbledon just a few days ago.
Archie has become the latest royal baby to wear the replica of the historic royal christening gown that Queen Elizabeth II commissioned in 2008, when the original from 1841 was deemed too fragile to wear. It's the same gown Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis all wore for their more public christenings. Congrats to the adorable newborn!
