Stand Up and Clap For Seth Meyers's Fierce Jab at Harvey Weinstein

09/01/2018 - 08:42 AM

With Seth Meyers hosting, there was no doubt the monologue for the Golden Globes [1] would be full of pointed zingers and political commentary. As he said right at the top, "It's 2018! Marijuana is finally allowed and sexual harassment finally isn't! It's gonna be a good year!"

The sexual harassment comment speaks to a lot of things — the #MeToo hashtag [2], the #TimesUp movement [3], and women in general demanding to be seen and heard and no longer remaining silent. But later in the monologue, Meyers made a more pointed joke about Harvey Weinstein being rightly run out of Hollywood after dozens of women came forward [4] in the past few months with their stories about his harassment, abuse, and assault.

Seth quipped, "Harvey Weinstein isn't here tonight because, well, I've heard rumours that he's crazy and difficult to work with. But don't worry — he'll be back in 20 years when he becomes the first person ever booed during the In Memoriam."

Now, Seth doesn't come right out and talk about the allegations because, legally, he probably can't say anything about their veracity, hence the "crazy and difficult to work with," even though rape allegations are decidedly more serious than "difficult to work with." But the room audibly gasped and "oooh'ed" when Seth got to the second part of his joke, to which Meyers then cracked, ". . . It'll sound like that."

Now that's how you call out the creeps.
