Ariana Grande's "Thank U, Next" Music Video Honoured Mac Miller in Such a Sweet Way

03/12/2018 - 05:40 PM

Ariana Grande's video for breakup anthem "Thank U, Next" [1] was chock-full of Easter eggs, [2]celebrity cameos [3], and truly iconic moments [4]. One of the most talked about scenes is when Ariana, in full Mean Girls [5] mode, is lying on her bed and going through a Burn Book filled with photos of her exes [6] with comments and descriptions for each of them. However, there was one ex-boyfriend that was missing from the book: the late rapper Mac Miller, who Ariana dated from August 2016 to May 2018 [7].

One fan on Twitter mentioned seeing pictures of Mac, along with Ariana's other exes [8], while the singer was flipping through the Burn Book, but Ariana quickly noted that Mac was actually next to her bed rather than in the book.

M ain't in the book he next to my bed

Naturally, we've been rewinding, pausing, and zooming in on the video to catch a glimpse of where the subtle tribute to Mac is. There definitely are pictures next to Ariana's bed, but it's pretty hard to decipher who and/or what is framed. All we can really notice when Ariana sings the lyric about Mac is that she closes the Burn Book and looks up to the sky. Perhaps that in and of itself is a part of the tribute — to honour the rapper by including him in the video but making it a little more private and personal to Ariana.

Mac Miller died on Sept. 7 at the age of 26 [10]. It was recently revealed that the cause of death [11] was an accidental overdose of fentanyl, cocaine, and alcohol, which caused the "Ladders" rapper to go into cardiac arrest. Shortly after his death, Ariana shared a personal photo of Mac [12] on Instagram. Later, she posted an old video of the two hanging out together [13] with a heartfelt caption. More recently, Ariana posted an homage to Mac on Thanksgiving [14] and covered up a tattoo that was previously dedicated to ex-fiancé Pete Davidson's father, replacing it with a tribute to Mac Miller's dog [15], who she took in [16] following Mac's death.
