Trevor Noah's Sly Black Panther Joke at the Oscars Had a Hilarious Hidden Meaning
The Daily Show host Trevor Noah took the Oscars stage Sunday night to present the montage for best picture nominee Black Panther, and his inspirational speech had a hilarious hidden message. The South African comedian, who actually had a small role in Black Panther, took some time while presenting the film to tell the audience that people around the world frequently come up to him and say "Wakanda forever" — a reference to the fictional African country.
In a nod to his fellow South Africans, Trevor shared a funny (fake) personal anecdote. "Growing up as a young boy in Wakanda, I would see T'Challa flying over our village, and he would remind me of a great Xhosa phrase," Trevor told the Oscars crowd. "He says 'abelungu abazi ubu ndiyaxoka' — which means 'In times like these, we are stronger when we fight together than when we try to fight apart." For those of us who don't speak Xhosa, one of the official languages of South Africa, Trevor actually said, "White people don't know I'm lying," and we have to give him props for a truly excellent roast that Shuri would be proud to hear.
