As Prince Harry and Meghan Markle [1] just announced that they're expecting [2], we imagine that they don't have a name picked out for the new royal just yet, but it's never too early to speculate. This will be the pair's first child, so we can't make any guesses based off of the names of former children. However, there's a long tradition of family names [3] being handed down to royal babies, so it's likely that Harry and Meghan's future child will be given a name with some history. Here are just a few of the names we could see for the forthcoming royal baby.
Albert
Not only would this name honour Harry's great-grandfather, Albert Edward John Spencer — Albert is also one of Harry's middle name. This name was once vetoed by Princess Diana [5] for being "too old" but perhaps it will appeal to Harry and Meghan.
Elizabeth
Though Elizabeth has been passed down several royal generations, for Harry and Meghan this name could be a nod to Harry's grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, though they may not choose it while the Queen is still alive.
Henry
Little known fact: Harry's name is actually Henry, so his son could potentially get his father's name as well.
Diana
Diana would be the perfect way to honour Harry's late mother, Diana, Princess of Wales. However, one of Princess Charlotte's middle names is already Diana, so it's possible that the couple would want to opt for something else.
Philip
Again, though it's unlikely they would still choose this name while Philip is still alive, choosing Philip would honour Harry's grandfather, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
Alice
The name Alice has not been given since Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester, who was 102 years old when she died in 2004, making her Britain's oldest-ever royal. Alice was very close with the Queen, who was her niece. Prince Philip's mother, Princess Alice of Battenberg, also shared the name.
Charles
Charles is another common occurrence in the royal family, though for Harry and Meghan, it would honour Harry's father, Charles, Prince of Wales, as well as give a nod to another of Harry's middle names.
Doria
Though not a traditional royal name, it's also possible that the two will go with Doria as a nod to Meghan's mother, Doria Ragland.
