Princess Eugenie is giving us our second royal wedding of the year when she gets married [1] on Oct. 12, 2018. The 28-year old will wed Jack Brooksbank, a wine merchant who has been dating the princess [2] since 2010. Details have already begun trickling in from palace officials [3], and if you think Eugenie's wedding is going to be on the same level as her cousin Harry's [4], you might be in for a shock. Yes, she'll be tying the knot at St. George's Chapel in Windsor (the same church where Meghan and Harry said their "I dos" and she'll get to wear a tiara for the first time [5] — but instead of getting a shiny new title, as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle did [6], Eugenie could potentially give hers up.
When Eugenie ties the knot, she actually has the choice of giving up her HRH Princess Eugenie of York title and being known instead as Lady Eugenie (which, let's be honest, still has a nice ring to it). According to royal historian Marlene Eilers Koenig, Eugenie could also keep her HRH style and adopt Jack's last name [8]. "She will be styled either as HRH Princess Eugenie, Mrs. Brooksbank or she could choose not to use her husband's surname," the author told Hello! in January.
As ninth in line for the throne [9], Eugenie doesn't have many of the same royal responsibilities (or the perks) that her adult cousins do. For one, she doesn't have to get permission from Queen Elizabeth II to marry Jack [10] — and even though she and her sister Beatrice are "blood princesses," they aren't technically working royals and are not obligated to carry out official duties.
So, what about Jack? Marlene Koenig reports that the 31-year-old "will not be getting any title from the queen [11]." Because Eugenie doesn't work for her grandmother, her spouse is not afforded the same designation as, say, Meghan Markle [12], who is married to a senior member [13] of the royal family. We'll just have to wait until October to see which title Eugenie decides to go with!
