When Is Peter Capaldi Leaving Doctor Who?

Peter Capaldi Is Officially Leaving Doctor Who

The Doctor . . . is out. On Monday, BBC announced that Peter Capaldi will be leaving Doctor Who after the upcoming series (aka season). Capaldi has played the titular character on the long-running British show since 2013, when he took over the helm from Matt Smith. The news was announced via the show's official Twitter handle.

Capaldi is just the latest actor to portray the character — the twelfth, to be exact. (Or the thirteenth, if you want to count the late John Hurt, who played a version of the Doctor during the 50th anniversary special.) Smith, David Tennant, Christopher Eccleston, and Paul McGann all played the character in the '90s and '00s. This news simply leaves us with the question: who's next?
