Princess Eugenie Has Friends in High Places — Here Are Some of Them

02/04/2019 - 11:51 PM

Gone are the days when the royal family [1] could only associate with other royals and high-ranking aristocrats. Nowadays, members of the royal family hang out with Hollywood actors [2], pop musicians, designers [3], and a wide variety of people without a single title. The people who move in royal circles, though, are still pretty extraordinary in some way.

Princess Eugenie is a perfect example of this kind of modern royal. She's low enough in the line of succession [4] that she's not a "working royal" and instead has spent her career working in the art world [5], which has brought her in touch with some of the biggest names in pop culture. The princess is known to love spending time with her friends — here are eight of the people she's likely to spend the most time with!

Princess Beatrice of York

Princess Eugenie's closest friend throughout her life has been her older sister Beatrice. The sisters are less than two years apart in age, and they've always been close. Back in 2008, Eugenie gave her first official interview [6] to Britain's The Telegraph, and she opened up about how the pair are just like every other pair of sisters (albeit a bit better dressed): very different people, but each other's biggest supporter.

"I am definitely not as polite as Beatrice, I have to say. I tell it as it is. I am shyer at first. Like, at a party I will say to Beatrice as we go in, 'Oh, you go first.' But then, when we're actually in, I am much louder and she is far more polite and solicitous." But like most sisters, they get along sometimes but also have fought about silly things.

"We get on fantastically well, perhaps because we do and think different things. It's quite funny how, like most sisters, we sometimes fight about clothes. I always take her clothes back to school, for instance, which she hates . . . Like all sisters, we have silly arguments about unimportant stuff, but we do love each other to death."

Robbie Williams and Ayda Field

Singer Robbie Williams and his wife, actress Ayda Field, are among the princess's famous friends. Robbie and Eugenie reportedly met back in 2011 [7], when they met, along with Eugenie's mother and sister, on a Caribbean holiday, according to the Daily Mail.

For proof of the couple's friendship with the princess, look no further than her 2018 wedding. Not only were Williams and Field guests at the royal wedding, but their six-year-old daughter Theodoura was one of Eugenie's bridesmaids, along with several of the royal children.

Tracey Emin

At first glance, it certainly seems like a mismatched friendship: an artist and a princess, born in two different generations. As it turns out, though, the princess has been a longtime fan of Emin's, and the pair became friends back in the early 2010s.

Eugenie actually interviewed her friend and mentor [8] for Harper's Bazaar back in 2013, where the pair revealed more about their friendship. The duo met around 2011 or so, when both were living in New York and crossing paths in the city's thriving art scene. They got along "like a house on fire," as the princess joked, and Eugenie calls her artist friend "a guardian angel."

Cressida Bonas

Most royal watchers probably know Bonas as Prince Harry's ex, but she was his cousin Eugenie's friend first! According to Marie Claire, the two women have been friends for years [9]. In fact, it was Eugenie who first introduced her friend Bonas to Prince Harry back in 2012.

Even after Harry and Bonas split amicably in 2014, she remained close with Eugenie. The Daily Mail spotted them laughing and hanging out at a 2016 art exhibition [10], and Bonas even attended Eugenie's wedding.

Ed Sheeran

The singer has been friends with Princess Eugenie's family for years — he's reportedly close with her sister Beatrice and her mother Sarah, Duchess of York, too. His history with Eugenie, though, involves a minor but funny accident!

As reported by The Sun, Eugenie accidentally injured Sheeran [11] during a night out. Both were part of a dinner party, where James Blunt reportedly joked that he'd love to be knighted. Eugenie mock-knighted him, but when she lifted the sword, she didn't realise Sheeran was right behind her, and accidentally nicked his face.

It was all taken in stride, and the pair reportedly are good friends to this day!

Meghan, Duchess of Sussex

Ever since Meghan Markle [12] has joined the royal family, she and Princess Eugenie have been good friends. Eugenie was one of the first royals to meet Meghan [13], even before she and Prince Harry revealed their relationship publicly, and the duo have formed a real friendship.

Up until Harry and Meghan moved to their own home in Windsor, the Sussexes were essentially "neighbours" with Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank. The couples lived side-by-side in Kensington Palace for a while, giving the two newlywed couples time to support each other through the whirlwind!

Ellie Goulding

Pop star Goulding is one of the celebs who's become close with the whole younger generation of royals. The Standard reported that she first met Prince William [14] nearly a decade ago, after he was a fan of her set at the BBC1 Radio concert. From there, she eventually was introduced to his brother and his cousins — she even sang for William and Kate's first dance at their 2011 wedding reception!

Since then, Goulding and Eugenie have been spotted hanging out, from international holidays to New York Knicks games and more. It's even been rumoured that Eugenie was the person who set up Goulding with her fiancé, art dealer Caspar Jopling, who Eugenie knew from her work in the art world.

Cara Delevingne

The trendy model made headlines for wearing a snazzy pantsuit to Princess Eugenie's 2018 wedding, but she got approval from the princess herself. According to Harper's Bazaar, Delevingne texted Eugenie for permission [15], and got it — unsurprising, considering the pair have apparently been "friends since childhood."

Delevingne has celebrated plenty of milestones with Eugenie. The Daily Mail reported that Delevingne was one of the guests [16] at the princess's 25th birthday celebration back in 2015, and the friends have been spotted at several events over the years.
