ICYMI: Here's Why People Are Wearing Black to the Golden Globes

08/01/2018 - 02:26 AM

Every year, celebrities put on their finest outfits and sparkling jewellery as they prepare to hit the red carpet for the Golden Globes [1], but the show looked a lot less colourful this year, and it's a statement that speaks volumes for the entertainment industry. On Sunday night, there were very few "who are you wearing?" conversations and more "why are you wearing black?" as the focus has shifted away from fashion statements and more toward activism. In December, it was reported that celebrities would be donning all black [2] to protest sexual harassment, but that was just the start. What was previously a rainbow sea of stars is now a sparkling group of black suits and gowns — and a major middle finger to abusers.

At the beginning of the month, more than 300 celebrities and power females revealed that it was more than just wearing black; they founded Time's Up to ban together against workplace sexual harassment and assault [3]. Reese Witherspoon [4], Eva Longoria [5], America Ferrera [6], and more announced the legal defense fund [7], as well as a Time's Up pin [8] that we're seeing all over the red carpet. The pin is a symbol of solidarity.

In addition to ditching colour, many celebrities have also ditched their arm candy, swapping spouses for activists [9]. Celebs like Amy Poehler [10], Susan Sarandon, Meryl Streep [11], Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley, Michelle Williams [12], and Emma Watson [13] brought activists from all different industries as their dates, including #MeToo founder Tarana Burke, Billie Jean King, and more.

"We believe we are nearing a tipping point in transforming the culture of violence in the countries where we live and work," the eight women said in a statement. "It's a moment to transform both the written and unwritten rules that devalue the lives and experiences of women."
