Every Girls Aloud Music Video, Ranked According to Awesomeness

13/09/2020 - 11:50 AM

The girls may have long moved on to motherhood [1], roles in big TV soaps [2], and solo projects [3], but that hasn't stopped us reminiscing about the golden years of Girls Aloud recently. They had a special place in our hearts for 10 years, bringing their cheeky brand of pop music to the masses following their victory on Popstars: The Rivals. From pretty ballads to banging dance-pop floorfillers, they chalked up 21 top 10 singles and four number ones, each one of them accompanied by a memorable video. Everyone has a favourite, but we think we've nailed down the definitive list of Girls Aloud videos. Forget the songs for a second; this is about the visuals, the dance routines, and the early 2000s hairdos. Get ready for some serious nostalgia!

"Life Got Cold"

Do you remember this song from the first album? Nope, neither did the 100 people asked by BBC quiz show Pointless to name Girls Aloud singles. We blame the waistcoats, the bus, and the fact they put Cheryl in a boy band coat.

"Jump"

Aside from the fact this is technically only half a Girls Aloud video due to all the footage from Love Actually, we can't let those customised t-shirts and neon sportswear take this any higher up the list.

"Call the Shots"

Product placement klaxon! Obviously featuring that phone so prominently in the establishing shots paid for all the girls to get their hair straightened. There's nothing wrong with this video, it's just got tough competition.

"Something Kind Ooh"

Such a brilliant song. Such a boring video. Excellent fake driving skills, though. We have to question the stylist who thought it was a good idea to put Nicola Roberts in a white catsuit with a polo neck, though. What did she ever do to you?

"I Think We're Alone Now"

The Girls Aloud are always good at camping it up in video scenarios, but this is not our favourite. They did Sarah Harding up as Sharon Stone [4] in Casino, which was probably a mistake.

"Wake Me Up"

What is it with Girls Aloud driving in videos? We're going to go out on a limb here and say none of them has a motorcycle licence. Shout-out to Cheryl and her temporary tattoo though. Foreshadowing much?!

"Sound of the Undergroud"

Brilliant pop song. Brilliant girl band. Not quite enough experience yet. With the tight ponytail and the zip-up jacket, Cheryl sort of looks like that girl who bullied you in year 10. Still, could be worse. Could be One True Voice [5].

"I'll Stand by You"

You can tell it's 2004 by the boho belts and blonde highlights. But by this point, we think the girls had probably earned enough that someone could have shelled out for a trip to Lanzarote to film on a proper beach. Think Destiny's Child's "Survivor," but with more Nadine Coyle.

"See the Day"

This was in prime prom-dress era, and it was a Christmas single, so of course the tinkly, romantic song has a tinkly, romantic video to go with it. They're in a snow globe! There are just a few issues, the main one being that we all know that's not a pond on the floor, it's a mirror.

"Sexy No, No, No"

Another example of an excellent song with a disappointing video. Eye makeup? Good. Nadine's hair? Not so good. Shiny red bin-bag dresses? Inexplicable.

"Beautiful Cos You Love Me"

This was the last single the girls ever released, and while there is nothing wrong with a little soft-focus loveliness (or letting Nicola have her moment and belt out a chorus), it's no "Biology," is it?

"Whole Lotta History"

This isn't so much a Girls Aloud video as it is a Taylor Swift video [6].

"The Loving Kind"

Wind Machines, the musical.

"The Promise"

The Promise is one of the best Girls Aloud songs, but the video is a bit of a letdown. The sequinned dresses are great (and this is where Cheryl first discovered huge hair), but the secondary string where the girls smugly watch themselves feels like a bit of a wasted opportunity. Imagine this song with an Austin Powers-inspired, "Love Machine"-era comedy video. Now that would have been wonderful.

"Untouchable"

We loved watching CatterpillarNicola emerging a pale and interesting butterfly in this video, finally allowed to wear something sexy without dousing herself in gravy browning first. She and Cheryl wore gaffer tape bodysuits whilst rolling around space in human-sized hamster balls. The budget for this video probably equalled the spend on videos for the whole first album. Especially when it came to hairstyling.

"No Good Advice"

Nobody got off well when it came to wardrobe in this video, but Sarah somehow allowed herself to be squeezed into a pair of tinfoil city shorts. For that reason and that reason alone, "No Good Advice" makes the top 10. We're also big fans of the early Girls Aloud obsession with tambourines. And they say these girls don't play their own instruments!

"Walk This Way"

Would anyone else love to see Girls Aloud and Sugababes have a fight? This is the closest you're going to get.

"Can't Speak French"

Usually, dodgy historical references lead us to make comments about the influencer rolling in their grave. But let's be honest, if Marie Antoinette was alive to see this, she'd probably love it. Extra marks if you've ever listened to the other version, sung entirely in French [7]. Ooh la la!

"Long Hot Summer"

This is the most underrated Girls Aloud song ever. Even the man who wrote it called it "a disaster." But we love it. You are taking a risk when you ask Nadine to rap, but this video has all the early Girls Aloud trademarks we love. Our only question? It's supposed to be boiling hot . . . so why do Nadine, Sarah, and Nicola all change into things with long sleeves?

"Biology"

One journalist said this video had "endearingly shambolic synchronised dance moves." It was filmed at a different speed to give it a disjointed feel, so don't blame the girls, blame the director! It's true that before Cheryl became Will.i.am's protege and Kimberley ruled on Strictly Come Dancing, a Girls Aloud dance routine basically involved choreographed posing in prom dresses and cinch belts. But there's nothing wrong with that. Especially when there's jazz piano, butterflies, and flock wallpaper for added flourish.

"The Show"

Apparently being a Girls Aloud beauty therapist requires a comedy alter ego, a choppy fringe, contrasting streaks, and All the Fake Tan (Nicola, we're so, so sorry). Even if you wouldn't trust Cheryl with the hot wax, don't pretend you didn't want to book an appointment to Curls Allowed when you first saw this video in 2004.

"Love Machine"

If "Love Machine" isn't your favourite Girls Aloud song, you're in the minority. But music aside, this video has everything we love the girls for. Of-the-time outfits that look incredibly naff now, stage school overacting, far too much fake tan, questionable layered haircuts, and more enthusiasm than is healthy. We miss the days when pop videos were silly, not sexy. You just don't get boy bands dressed like puppets or girl bands making tiger faces anymore.

"Something New"

Aside from the fact they made walking in a straight line a legitimate dance move in this video, there's one solitary reason why this is the best Girls Aloud video ever . . .

Fact: WTF Nadine is the best Nadine.
