The Biggest Celebrity Breakups of 2021 — So Far

18/11/2021 - 09:45 AM

From Zoë Kravitz and Karl Glusman [1] to Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik [2], this year has already been sprinkled with its fair share of celebrity breakups. While it certainly hasn't been easy to watch these couples go their separate ways, sometimes it's for the best. For some couples, like Phoebe Dynevor [3] and Pete Davidson, long distance was a factor, and for others, like Kim Kardashian [4] and Kanye West [5], their split was amicable and they still remain good friends. Ahead, check out the biggest celebrity breakups from this year so far.

Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello

On Nov. 17, after over two years of dating, Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello [6] released a joint statement announcing that they had broken up. "Hey guys, we've decided to end our romantic relationship but our love for one another as humans is stronger than ever," the post read. "We started our relationship as best friends and will continue to be best friends. We so appreciate your support from the beginning and moving forward."

As they mentioned in their statement, the singers started off as friends, meeting during Austin Mahone's Live On tour in 2014. Dating rumours began spreading after they were spotted together backstage at the iHeartRadio Music Festival the following year. It wasn't until July 2019, however, that the two finally announced they were a couple (after several months of keeping people guessing over the summer, that is), shortly after the music video for their duet "Señorita" [7] dropped.

Madelyn Cline and Chase Stokes

In November, People reported that the Outer Banks [8] costars split after more than a year of dating [9]. "Madelyn and Chase are no longer together," a source told the publication. "They were trying to work things out privately but broke up a couple of months ago."

Zayn Malik and Gigi Hadid

The on-and-off-again couple, who share a 1-year-old daughter named Khai, split in October [10]. The breakup came shortly after reports that Zayn allegedly "struck" Gigi's mother [11], Yolanda, during a dispute. "In an effort to protect that space for [Khai] I agreed not to contest claims arising from an argument I had with a family member of my partner's who entered our home while my partner was away several weeks ago," Zayn wrote in a statement. In a second statement to TMZ, he added, "I adamantly deny striking Yolanda Hadid and for the sake of my daughter I decline to give any further details and I hope that Yolanda will reconsider her false allegations and move towards healing these family issues in private." Gigi's rep shared a statement [12] to E! News, saying, "Gigi is solely focussed on the best for Khai. She asks for privacy during this time."

Miguel and Nazanin Mandi

The longtime couple — who tied the knot in November 2018 [13] — announced their separation [14] to People in September. "After 17 years together, Miguel and Nazanin Mandi have decided to separate and have been for some time now," a rep for the duo stated. "The couple both wish each other well."

Kanye West and Irina Shayk

After only a few months of dating, the couple went their separate ways [15] in August, with a source telling People their relationship was never "a serious thing that took off." Another source added that their busy schedules caused their split, saying, "Kanye has been busy working and spending time with his kids. This is his focus. He doesn't have time to date right now. He finds Irina amazing though. They remain friendly."

Alex Rodriguez and Jennifer Lopez

The pair went their separate ways [16] after four years together in April. "We have realised we are better as friends and look forward to remaining so," they said in a joint statement to Today. "We will continue to work together and support each other on our shared businesses and projects. We wish the best for each other and one another's children. Out of respect for them, the only other comment we have to say is thank you to everyone who has sent kind words and support." Jennifer has since rekindled her romance with Ben Affleck [17]

Camila Mendes and Grayson Vaughan

The couple called it quits [18] after nearly a year of dating in March. "There was no drama at all, and they are still friends. Their relationship just ran its course," a source told E! News. "Camila has been shooting in Canada and travel has been banned, so the pandemic didn't make it easy to see each other."

Saweetie and Quavo

The pair called it quits [19] after three years together in March. Saweetie confirmed the split on Twitter, saying she "endured too much betrayal and hurt behind the scenes for a false narrative to be circulating that degrades my character." She also shed light on the possible reason behind their breakup, writing, "Presents don't band aid scars and the love isn't real when the intimacy is given to other women." She added, "I emotionally checked out a long time ago and have walked away with a deep sense of peace and freedom. Excited for this new chapter of elevation."

Quavo seemingly responded to her statement shortly after, tweeting, "I had love for you and disappointed you did all that. You are not the woman I thought you were. I wish you nothing but the best 🙏🏾."

Zoë Kravitz and Karl Glusman

Zoë technically filed for divorce [20] from Karl after a year of marriage in December 2020, but it wasn't until January that her rep confirmed the news [21] to People. No other details were revealed at the time.

Elliot Page and Emma Portner

Elliot filed for divorce from Emma [22] after three years of marriage in January. "After much thought and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to divorce following our separation last summer," the duo said in a joint statement. "We have the utmost respect for each other and remain close friends."

Ashley Benson and G-Eazy

The couple broke up [23] after less than a year of dating in February. According to People, things "didn't end well," though Ashley nor G-Eazy never publicly addressed the split.

Ana de Armas and Ben Affleck

Ana and Ben decided to part ways [24] after nearly one year together in January. According to People, Ana was the one who "broke it off." A source added, "Their relationship was complicated. Ana doesn't want to be Los Angeles-based and Ben obviously has to, since his kids live in Los Angeles."

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West

After much speculation, Kim officially filed for divorce [25] from Kanye after six years of marriage in February. Variety reported that the split was "amicable" and that Kim requested joint legal and physical custody of their four children, North, Saint, Chicago, and Psalm. While neither of them have publicly commented on the split, according to E! News, they just "grew apart [26]." A source added, "She tried to give it a chance. She wanted to do this last year. She gave it plenty of time, but it's just time to move on. There were no affairs. No one did anything bad."

Kris Jenner briefly spoke about the divorce [27] during a March appearance on The Kyle & Jackie O Show. "I think it's always going to be hard anytime, you know, there's a lot of kids," she said. "The good thing about our family is that we are there for each other and supportive and we love each other very, very much, so all I want is for those two kids to be happy. And I want the kids to be happy. That's the goal."

Jason Derulo and Jena Frumes

Jason and Jena broke up [28] after a little over a year of dating in September. "Jena and I have decided to part ways," the singer tweeted. "She is an amazing mother but we feel being apart at this time will allow us to be the best versions of ourselves and the best parents we could be." Jason and Jena share a son named Jason King.

John Mulaney and Anna Marie Tendler

The comedian filed from his wife [29] of nearly seven years in July. John confirmed the split exclusively to Page Six in a statement through his rep. "John will not have any further comment as he continues to focus on his recovery and getting back to work," his rep said in a statement, referencing John's recent rehab stay. "I am heartbroken that John has decided to end our marriage," Anna Marie said in a separate statement to People. "I wish him support and success as he continues his recovery."

John is now dating Olivia Munn and they're expecting their first child [30] together.

Phoebe Dynevor and Pete Davidson

The pair first sparked dating rumours in March, but reportedly split in August [31] due to long distance. Phoebe is currently in the UK filming Bridgerton [32] season two, while Pete is based in NYC. "They had fun, but it wasn't sustainable being so far apart," a source told the publication. "It was great while it lasted, but they both agreed it was best to move on."
