Molly-Mae Hague Admits She Was "Not Prepared" for Motherhood

22/03/2023 - 12:55 PM

While celebrities may have the resources of extra help and financial security, the impact of motherhood is still a life-changing experience for them. Whether they are first-time mothers like Rihanna, who welcomed her first child [1] with A$AP Rocky in May 2022, or they have a large brood like "Loose Women" panellist Stacey Solomon who gave birth to her fifth child in February [2], being a parent, and especially a mother, is undoubtedly emotionally tricky to navigate, but also one of the most fulfilling jobs out there.

Former "Love Island" star Molly-Mae Hague, who gave birth to her first child with Tommy Fury [3] in Jan., opened up about her experience in an Instagram [4] Q&A on 21 March. One follower asked: "Is having a baby harder than you imagined?" Hague replied: "'Yes. 100% yes. I'm not going to beat around the bush... I was not prepared. She's completely and utterly worth it all though. Every single hard moment!"

And she's not the only celebrity who has got refreshingly honest about motherhood. From birth to caring for a newborn and the responsibility of raising children, these women have all been real about becoming a parent — the good, the bad, and the nappy overloads. They have also reminded us that each person's journey with their children is different. Chrissy Teigen initially admitted that she struggled to bond [5] with her children, while Jennifer Lawrence expressed her anxiety [6] about whether she was doing things right. On the other hand, celebs like Blake Lively [7] and "Game of Thrones" star Sophie Turner have spoken about how having a baby [8] has made them better people, while Lily Allen reflected on feeling guilty [9] for the choices she made during her daughters' early life. Plus, there's of course some hilarious anecdotes that come with the job, too!

So whether you have children or not, you'll probably relate in some way or another to these stars comments, thoughts, and opinions on motherhood, which show us that they are just like the rest of us.

Molly-Mae Hague

Molly-Mae Hague has been honest on social media about her journey in becoming a first-time mother since welcoming her baby girl Bambi with boxer Tommy Fury [10] in January. In one such Instagram Story [11], shared recently, the former "Love Island" star wrote: "Bambi is 6 weeks old on Monday. My little best friend for life. The last two days have been the first time I've felt like I'm slightly getting my life back in order." Molly added: "Up until this point, I've literally just been winging my way through each day, not finding it particularly easy at all (to be honest)… waking up in the morning/going to bed at night thinking 'here we go again.'" She added that motherhood "truly does get easier" with time.

The Pretty Little Thing director added on 21 March that she was "not prepared" for motherhood, but it's "utterly worh it".

Rihanna

Rihanna [12] welcomed her first child, a baby son, on 13 May, 2022, and had only offered a rare glimpse of the youngster on TikTok [13] until this year. That all changed as she graced the cover of British Vogue [14] for its March issue with her adorable youngster and other half, A$AP Rocky. During the cover interview, the songstress was incredibly candid about her journey to motherhood as she admitted that giving birth was a "head f***". She explained: "Essentially, from one person, I became two. You walk into the hospital as a couple and leave as a family of three. It's nuts!"

She added some seriously honest insights into what it was like during those first few weeks. "You're so paranoid. Because you're like: they trusted us to come home with this baby? This new life? With us?" she recalled. "No doctors, no nurses, we're just . . . going home?" After the initial shock of keeping a newborn happy, Rihanna [15] pointed out some relateable moments. "[T]hose first days are insane. You don't sleep. At all. Not even if you wanted to. We came home, cold turkey, had no one. It was just us as parents and our baby. Man, you're a zombie for the most part," she said.

We're sure the pregnant star [16] will know exactly what to expect when she gives birth to baby number two!

Stacey Solomon

Stacey Solomon welcomed her fifth child [17] (her third with her husband, Joe Swash) in February 2023 and regularly shares detailed insights into her life as a busy mother, the bond between her children, and how grateful she is for her blended family. The star is also sure to give much-needed advice to other mothers struggling. In March 2022, Solomon shared a comforting message on Instagram [18] to mothers who "feel like they're failing", writing on Instagram: "Right now, it feels hard, but each day you still show up, even through exhaustion. You pour your love into your children, even though your cup feels empty. You do the best you can, even when you think you can't. And that dear mama is not failing. You are amazing."

She added a little reminder to other parents on 14 March, too. With her newborn Bellw in tow, she wrote on Instagram: "Just a little reminder that you're doing amazing, even when you feel like you're not. You're so incredible don't forget to tell yourself that sometimes."

Lily Allen

Lily Allen [19] now makes a picture-perfect family with her "Stranger Things" husband, David Harbour [20] and her two daughters Ethel, eleven, and Marnie, ten, who she shares with her ex-husband Sam Cooper. However, things weren't always as smooth, as she admitted to feeling "guilty" for "neglecting her kids" at the peak of her addiction issues in 2014. Her troubles continued the following year when she cheated on her then-husband, Sam. Reflecting on the impact it had on her relationship with her daughters in an interview with The Mirror [21] in 2021, the singer explained: "I felt so guilty for neglecting my kids in those early years of their life and having to go off on tour and misbehaving the way I was. I really have a great relationship with kids now." Lily added: "They're confident little girls - touch wood, they're not going to turn into drug addicts like I did."

Katherine Ryan

We all love to laugh along with Katherine Ryan, but it was no laughing matter as the mother-of-three recently explained that her motherhood journey came with overcoming the "shame" of raising a child on her own. While she is now happily loved-up with her childhood sweetheart Bobby Kootstra, with who she shares two young children, Fred and Fenna, she raised her twelve-year-old daughter by herself following her split from her ex-husband, which greatly impacted her confidence in her career. "When I came to this country, I was a young single mother. I did feel shame about that - the narrative was I was damaged goods," she told Glamour Magazine [22]. "Everyone was like, 'why did he leave you?' And I was like, 'because I asked him to'. Soon I started feeling good about myself and enjoying the privilege that it was to have that time with my daughter and be a single mother to my daughter."

She also told Stylist [23] in 2020: "It was really important to show that single motherhood was nothing to be ashamed of. When I was raising my daughter, it certainly wasn't an aspect of my life that I disparaged or made me less attractive or less valuable. It's something that is actually a lot easier, in many ways, than having a man around."

Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence [24] welcomed her son, Cy, with her husband Cooke Marone in April 2022, and in the actress's true relatable form, everything she has said so far about motherhood has been super candid and brutally honest. Speaking on Variety's Actors on Actors series [25], the Oscar-winner explained: "Every day of being a mum, I feel awful. I feel guilty. I'm playing with [my son], and I'm like, 'Is this what he wants to be doing? Should we be outside? We're outside. What if he's cold? What if he's going to get sick? Should we be inside? Is this enough? Is his developing your brain enough?'"

Blake Lively

As well as having one of Hollywood's cutest and most enviable marriages to Ryan Reynolds [26], the pair also share four children [27], James, 8, Inez, 6, Betty, 3, and a newborn, whose name they haven't revealed yet. The former "Gossip Girl [28]" actress has gushed about her brood on several occasions and last year explained to Forbes [29] how her daughters helped her navigate who she is as a person. "I never felt more myself or at ease in my own body or more confident — not to say that there aren't a bevvy of insecurities coming at me a million times a day, but I just feel incredibly settled," she said.

Cardi B

Cardi B came clean about the realities of motherhood in an interview with Vogue Singapore [30] last year. The rapper, who shares Kulture Kiari, 4, and one-year-old Wave Set with Offset, admitted that nothing could genuinely have prepared her for the impact having children would have on her career. She said: "I didn't have an album out when I found out I was pregnant. Everybody was so nervous for my career and future, but I kept telling them, 'It's easy. Trust me, I'm going to have a nanny, and she's going to travel up and down with me. It's not even going to be a hassle.'" She continued: "When the baby got here, I couldn't even think about getting a nanny because I was afraid of anybody being around her besides my family!" Cardi added that motherhood had made her "more compassionate for people".

Stacey Dooley

Stacey Dooley became a first-time mother in January [31] as she and Kevin Clifton welcomed their first child, a daughter named Minnie. And the Strictly star is still adjusting to motherhood, as is evident by the fun snippets she posts on her Instagram Stories [32]. Recently, the 35-year-old shared the inspirational quote: "It's okay if it takes a little longer than you thought," along with her own hilarious message in brackets, which read: "Me winding my daughter at 3am." Weeks earlier, she also posted an image with the caption: "What kind of Jennifer Coolidge weekend are you planning?" The post had several funny images of "The White Lotus [33]" star, to which Stacey quipped: "Actual images of me as a Mum", before adding, "(apart from 6 before I get cancelled)", which saw a picture of Jennifer smoking and drinking.

Meghan Markle

Meghan Markle [34], who is mother to Archie [35], 3, and one-year-old Lilibet [36], candidly detailed her motherhood journey on her Archetypes podcast [37], stating: "It is so much work to be a mum when you are just trying to be a conscious parent to raise good, kind human beings … to do that solo is the most impressive, admirable thing on the planet. But she admitted that the hardships were all too real, adding: "The pressures imposed [on] being a mum, a good mum or a good wife, the ideals we try to live up to and the expectations we self-impose … they're pretty trapping!"

Victoria Beckham

You can count on fashion designer and former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham [38] to relay the importance of wellness when it comes to maintaining her bond with her four children [39], Brooklyn, 24, Romeo, 20, Cruz, 18, and Harper, 11, who she shares with David Beckham [40]. "I have always taught my children to be kind to themselves and explore what makes them feel their best. For Harper, that's 'mummy and me' spa days—she loves a good face mask," Victoria told Vogue [41] during a 2021 interview.

Chrissy Teigen

One thing we know about Chrissy Teigen is that she's always open and honest, which applies to her life as a mother to three children, whom she shares with her husband, John Legend [42]. In an interview with She Knows [43], the model admitted that the early days of motherhood were always tough on her as she didn't always feel an instant connection with her children. "When I had my girl, Luna, I would kind of vent and complain that she didn't feel like she was connecting with me," she said. "I felt so sad that she wasn't connecting with me because I'm her mother, and I spend so much time with her. I'm nursing her, I'm doing everything I can for her." However, the feeling was only temporary, and she is now super connected with her kids!

Sophie Turner

Former "Game of Thrones" star Sophie Turner opened up about how becoming a mother [44] impacted her career. "The empathy is heightened; the feelings about family are just like overflowing," Sophie, who shares two daughters with Joe Jonas [45], said on the UnWrapped podcast [46]. "It's made me a better actor for becoming, you know, becoming a mother. The concept of family has made me an entirely much more emotional person."

Hilary Duff

Hilary Duff [47] had her first child, Luca, with her ex-husband Mike Comrie in 2012, and is also mother to Banks and Mae with her now-husband Matthew Koma. Along the way, the former "Lizzie McGuire" actress has given some amazing insights into motherhood [48]. In 2021, she spoke about her anxiety with breastfeeding then-newborn Mae, stating on "The Kelly Clarkson [49] Show": "All of the babies latch really great; I'm just not a huge milk producer, and so it's emotional for me . . . Right now, I don't know that I'm not producing as much as I need, but I think since I haven't in the past, I have tons of anxiety that I'm not and that she's not getting enough, and then I'm in my head, and then I don't feel like enough, and then, you know, the spiral continues from there."

Vogue Williams

As a mother to three young children, Theodore, four, Gigi, two, and 11-month-old Otto, Vogue Williams's hands are certainly full. So much so that the 37-year-old recently explained that she and her former "Made in Chelsea" star husband, Spencer Matthews, had to call off their ski holiday because of the difficulty in finding someone to look after their brood. But heartwarmingly, Vogue has admitted that cancelling the intimate time away with her husband was worth it because she'll soon get to spend the perfect and most fulfilling Mother's Day [50] at home. "I should be locking myself in my bedroom on my own to read my book because I'm allowed because it's Mother's Day, but that's not what I enjoy the most, " she told Hello! Magazine [51]. "My ideal Mother's Day is having a roast, being at home, relaxing with the kids and maybe going for a nice walk."
