David Beckham Was "So Lucky" to Have Met the Queen as He Pays Tribute to Her Legacy

Queen Elizabeth II has died at the age of 96 [1]. The longest-serving British monarch passed away "peacefully" at her Balmoral home on 8 Sept., as announced in a statement released by Buckingham Palace. Her incredible 70-year reign means many have never known life without her as the Head of State.

Her son, now King Charles III, is now the monarch as he led tributes with a statement reading, "The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family." There is no doubt the queen's death will be felt all around the world as thousands mourn the loss [2] with fitting tributes for Her Majesty.

Celebrities have also been paying their respects. Sir Elton John summed up the queen's legacy, writing on Instagram, "She was an inspiring presence to be around and led the country through some of our greatest and darkest moments with grace, decency and a genuine caring warmth." More stars are mourning the death of the queen by taking to social media and remembering her legacy at big events.

David Beckham

David Beckham [3] met the Queen a number of times thanks to his charity work. The former footballer posted three black and white images of the Queen onto Instagram [4], with a caption declaring he is "truly saddened by the death of Her Majesty, The Queen." He added that he has been comforted by seeing other tributes. "What an outpouring of love and respect we saw for the Platinum Jubilee for her life of service. How devastated we all feel today shows what she has meant to people in this country and around the world. How much she inspired us with her leadership. How she comforted us when times were tough. Until her last days she served her country with dignity and grace. This year she would have known how loved she was. My thoughts and prayers are with our Royal Family . . ."

He also joined the miles-long queue to see the Queen lying in state on 16 Sept., waiting in line for over 12 hours with members of the public. "It's a sad day, but it's a day for us to remember the incredible legacy that she's left," he told ITV News [5].

Claire Foy

Claire Foy, who played the Queen in the first two seasons of Netflix's "The Crown", has said she was "honoured" to have taken on the role. She told Lizo Mzimba at the BBC [6], "She united people and she was a massive symbol of continuity and dignity and grace. My main feeling is just thinking about her as a mother and a grandmother and a great-grandmother, really, and I'm very honoured to have been a teeny tiny, small part of her story."

Hannah Waddingham

At the 2022 Emmy Awards, the "Ted Lasso [7]" actor spoke of how the Queen's death affected her in a way she didn't expect. Speaking to Variety [8] on the red carpet, Waddington recounted, "It makes me emotional to think about it. I sat with my dad on the sofa and I watched it all night until I couldn't keep my eyes open because I couldn't believe it. It is like a grandmother dying. Olivia Colman

Harry Styles

During night 11 of his Madison Square Garden residency, pop star Harry Styles led a tribute to the Queen at the start of the concert. "From my homeland, there's some very sad news today: the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. Please join me in a round of applause for 70 years of service," he said, then thanked the gathered fans for the rousing applause.

Paddington Bear

After that adorable sketch where the queen and Paddington Bear bonded over marmalade sandwiches, specially for the Platinum Jubilee celebrations, Paddington himself posted a heartfelt tweet [11]. "Thank you Ma'am, for everything," it reads. A sentiment echoed up and down the country.

Sir Elton John, who was knighted by the queen in 1998, shared a heartwarming note in honour of the queen on Instagram [12]. The singer and composer wrote: "Along with the rest of the nation, I am deeply saddened to hear the news of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth's passing. She was an inspiring presence to be around and led the country through some of our greatest and darkest moments with grace, decency and a genuine caring warmth. Queen Elizabeth has been a huge part of my life from childhood to this day, and I will miss her dearly."

Dame Helen Mirren

Dame Helen Mirren [13] knew Queen Elizabeth II better than most after playing the titular role in the 2006 film "The Queen". The actor posted a portrait of the monarch on social media [14], declaring she is "proud to be an Elizabethan". Mirren continued, "We mourn a woman, who, with or without the crown, was the epitome of nobility."

Victoria Beckham

Victoria Beckham [15] took to Instagram [16] to post a black and white photo of the monarch and write a fitting caption. The former Spice Girl wrote: "Today is a very sad day not just for our country but for the entire world. I'm deeply saddened by the passing of our beloved Monarch, Her Majesty The Queen. Millie Bobby Brown

Millie Bobby Brown added a poignant quote from the Queen alongside a happy image of the Queen sitting in the garden in her younger days. Lewis Hamilton

In a poignant post, F1 champion Lewis Hamilton reflected on his time chatting with the Queen. Alongside a touching image of the late monarch smiling, he posted a personal tribute, revealing the two shared a love of dogs. "How do you find the words to describe the loss of Her Majesty The Queen? She was truly an iconic leader, an inspiration and a reassuring presence for most, if not all, of our lives," he wrote on Instagram [19].

"Since the sad news yesterday, I've been reflecting on her incredible life. She was a symbol of hope for so many and she served her country with dignity, dedication and kindness. British supermodel Naomi Campbell [20] shared a photo of the queen and her corgis on the beach to her Instagram Story [21]. Alongside the picture, she added a Union Jack emoji, a dove emoji, a prayer emoji, and two white heart emoji.

No words were necessary for Dua Lipa to express how she feels about the death of the queen. The singer simply shared an early portrait of the monarch on her Instagram story [22].

Over short clips of the queen throughout her life, a voice-over says, "We are all visitors to this time, this place. We are just passing through. Ed Sheeran

TV duo Ant and Dec took to Twitter [29] to leave a tribute for Her Majesty. "We are deeply saddened by the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Stephen Fry

In a joint Instagram post [41], Barack and Michelle Obama [42] shared a photograph of themselves with the queen and Prince Philip from 2016. They said they were "lucky enough" to get to know the queen and that she "meant a great deal" to them. The former president and first lady of the United States of America added: "Back when we were just beginning to navigate life as President and First Lady, she welcomed us to the world stage with open arms and extraordinary generosity. Time and again, we were struck by her warmth, the way she put people at ease, and how she brought her considerable humor and charm to moments of great pomp and circumstance."

Liz Truss

Prime Minister Liz Truss, who was formally anointed by the Queen on Tuesday, made a statement outside Downing Street shortly after the news broke. She said, "We are all devastated by the news that we have just heard from Balmoral," declaring that the Queen's death is "a huge shock to the nation and the whole world". Speaking emotively, she said the Queen was "the rock on which modern Britain was built", adding, "Britain is the great country it is today because of her."

Paul McCartney
