Editor's Note: The following story discusses instances of miscarriage and could be triggering for some people.
YouTuber Desi Perkins has announced that she and her husband, Steven, are expecting their first child. On Mother's Day, Desi shared a gorgeous video on Instagram revealing that they will receive their "best harvest yet" in October 2020. Steven shared a matching Instagram post at the same time, writing "As I type this I am bursting with happiness😭❤️ We are happy to announce a little Perkins 👶 🍼 will be joining the family. Happy Mother's Day to my beautiful wife. ❤️"
Over the past week, Desi and Steven have shared their seven-year fertility journey on their shared YouTube channel, "The Perkins", with a level of candour that's rarely shown publicly. The first episode of the series (which is titled "Our Fertility Journey") begins with Desi telling Steven that she is pregnant on May 9, 2013. Sadly, Desi had a miscarriage, and the pair have been trying to get pregnant ever since.
The series has four episodes so far, which have been watched well over three million times. In each video, Desi and Steven take us along to every appointment they've attended since seeking medical advice for fertility. Through all of the scans, needles, and deeply private moments, they haven't hidden any part of their journey, and to say it's emotional to watch is a huge understatement. Desi and Steven are pulling back the curtain on a topic that is often suffered over behind closed doors, and the response so far has been overwhelmingly positive. You can watch the first four episodes on their YouTube channel, "The Perkins".
