A Timeline of Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach's Relationship, From the Very Beginning

20/12/2019 - 10:10 PM

Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach are the least showy power couple in Hollywood [1]. Although they've been together for around eight years — and have been collaborating professionally even longer than that — we really don't know very much about them, because that's the way they prefer it. Their relationship has been conducted very privately, although they don't exactly hide, either; they're just the sort of people who prefer the focus to be on their work, not their relationship, and we can definitely respect that! Over the years, they've chosen to let the public in on a few aspects of their life together, particularly the films that they've collaborated on. As they both careen towards some of the best reviews of their careers [2] for their respective movies [3] this year [4], let's take a look back at what we do know about their relationship!

2010: Greta and Noah Meet Working on "Greenberg"

The duo first met in a professional capacity on the film Greenberg, which Noah directed and Greta starred in. At the time, their relationship was not a romantic one, just professional.

November 2010: Noah and Jennifer Jason Leigh Split

Since 2005, Noah had been married to actress Jennifer Jason Leigh, but in Nov. of 2010, Leigh filed for divorce, soon after their son was born.

2011: Noah and Greta Reportedly Begin Dating

A 2012 Los Angeles Times article called the creative collaborators "a real life couple [5]." Most reports seem to agree that they began dating sometime in 2011, although they kept things very private.

2013: Noah and Greta's "Frances Ha" Is Released

Noah and Greta co-wrote Frances Ha, an indie fave from 2013. Greta also starred in the movie, and Noah again directed.

2015: Noah and Greta Collaborate on "Mistress America"

The pair again co-wrote the film and this time, co-produced it as well, while Greta acted in it and Noah directed.

Jan. 2018: Greta Wins a Golden Globe and Forgets Noah In Her Speech

In January of 2018, Greta's Lady Bird took home the trophy for best comedy or musical at the Golden Globes — then accidentally left Noah out of her acceptance speech!

"I had an entire speech that I was going to give and I got up there... I looked at Oprah and I was like, 'It's gone!'" she said on a later interview on The View. "But I had a whole thing about him. He's my favourite writer and my favourite first reader."

Feb. 2018: Noah and Greta Show a Rare Bit of PDA at the Oscars

Even though they were publicly acknowledging their couple-dom at this point, the duo typically refrained from any sort of affectionate public gestures. They made an exception at the Oscars, though, where cameras snapped them holding hands as they worked the red carpet.

2019: Noah and Greta Welcome Their First Child (Plus Two Films!)

2019 shaped up to be a massive year for the couple. First, their reps confirmed to Page Six in March that they were officially parents [6] to a son, Harold, then their two major films — Greta's Little Women and Baumbach's Marriage Story — shaped up to be two of the biggest contenders for awards this year, making them the first couple to be serious contenders and competitors for the same awards in the same year.
