Liz Truss' Resignation Coincides with Taylor Swift's "Midnights" Release — Coincidence?

Liz Truss' resignation came just hours before the release of Taylor Swift's highly anticipated "Midnights" album. Coincidence? Or a strategic move so that she can play the album on repeat without interruption? The self-proclaimed "Swiftie" announced she was stepping down as Prime Minister and head of the Conservative Party on 20 Oct. after just 44 days following weeks of chaos in government. Upon the news, Channel 4 even played a montage of Truss and used Swift's "Blank Space", with a reporter commenting, "Liz Truss said that her favourite song was 'Blank Space' by Taylor Swift. We'll leave you with that and some images of her. Good night."

She might have had trouble gaining support from fellow MPs and the public as she failed to help with the cost of living crisis, but millennials and Gen Z music fans will, at least, appreciate her playlists. Videos compiling moments where Truss has publicly shown appreciation for the singer — including quoting her song "The Man" in Parliament — have been shared on TikTok. While some of Swift's unwavering online fanbase have joked that they "do not claim" Truss as one of their own, others are pleased to hear the unexpected news. Whether you agree with her politics or not, you can't deny that the idea of a Prime Minister singing and dancing to "Shake it Off" at Number 10 is giving us modern "Love Actually" vibes. The big question that remains today is not who will take over as PM, but whether Truss considers herself an "Antihero", a "Mastermind", or is waiting for "Karma" to come around.

After doing a deep dive into Truss's social media pages, we genuinely wouldn't be surprised if Truss has a "13" tattoo hidden somewhere. At least she now has time to attend the UK tour. As you try and wrap your head around this bizarre crossover, join us as we recall every time Truss has publicly fan-girled over the "All Too Well" singer.

During an International Women's Day debate on 8 March 2020, Truss (who was the British Minister for Women and Equalities at the time) took the opportunity to sneak a Taylor Swift quote into her speech. She said, "In the words of the brilliant Taylor Swift in her new song, 'Women are left running as fast as they can, wondering if they would get there quicker if they were a man.'"

At the Tory leadership hustings at London's Wembley Arena, which was broadcast live on LBC on 31 Aug., Truss chose a Taylor Swift song to walk on stage to. While the lyrics ("Because these things will change, Can you feel it now? These walls that they put up to hold us back will fall town") were fitting, viewers thought it was a random choice for the occasion. Also, "Change" is one of Swift's lesser known songs from her 2008 album "Fearless", so Truss's selection of this track highlights her as a true, long-term fan.

Surprise, surprise, a Swift song played in the background as Truss left the hustings victorious. The fact that Truss chose "Long Live" (a song from Swift's 2018 album "Speak Now") as the soundtrack for such an important moment in her career spoke volumes.

In February, 2019, Truss got to experience a moment that most of us can only dream of — she met Taylor Swift. In a picture taken at the Grosvenor House Hotel at a dinner celebrating the BAFTA Awards, the future Prime Minister posed for a picture with the pop star. Referencing a song from Swift's 2017 album "Reputation", Truss hilariously captioned the picture, "Look what you made me do, Taylor . . . . #squadgoals #swiftwork #trouble #bafta dinner".

Remember when Taylor Swift said, "Sorry, the old Taylor can't come to the phone right now. Why? Oh, 'cause she's dead," in the middle of her song "Look What You Made Me Do"? In a comedic nod to the iconic lyric, Truss posted a selfie in December 2019 while manning the telephones ahead of the election. Wearing a headset, she wrote: "I'm sorry, Liz Truss can't come to the phone right now..... cause she's #ringing2win". Amazing.
