AUSTIN, TEXAS - MARCH 09: Matthew McConaughey attends the

Matthew McConaughey [1] joining Instagram might be the best thing to happen to the app since its inception nine years ago. For his 50th birthday on Nov. 4, the actor and self-described "pickle expert" — yes, it's written in his bio — trepidatiously announced his arrival in the form of a video shot in a brightly lit foyer. "This is my first venture into sharing myself and my views with the world, and I'm a little bit nervous about it," he said.

Wearing a shearling denim jacket and a backward baseball cap, Matthew proceeded to rattle off several existential thoughts about the nature of social media and the purpose of his account. The whole thing is perhaps what we'd imagine from one of his UT Austin courses [2]. It's True Detective with the X-Pro II filter serving as cinematographer. It's Interstellar except more decipherable. Simply put, it is peak McConaughey.

Because there's a lot to unpack from that one-minute video alone, below are a few of the most important philosophical takeaways from McConaughey's social media sermon. We look forward to the content that lies ahead.

  1. "I know I want to have a monologue. I'm not sure I want to have the dialogue."
  2. "I've learned that you got to have the dialogue to have the monologue, just as you have to have a monologue to have the dialogue."
  3. "I'm looking forward to seeing if: who I am translates, if what I want to share translates, if it tickles your funny bone, if it makes you think a second, if it makes your heart swell up a little bit, if it makes you take a quiet moment for a walk and go, 'I got to check in with the M and the E.' Hopefully all those things."
  4. "Let's keep the high eye, not the low eye."
