Princess Beatrice and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi's Wedding Has Been Cancelled Amid Coronavirus

17/04/2020 - 10:15 AM

This post has been updated with new information.

Amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Princess Beatrice and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi have decided to cancel their upcoming wedding [1], People confirms. The pair was set to tie the knot on May 29, but due to coronavirus concerns, "the invitations were never actually sent out." In March, it was announced that the couple would forgo a reception at the Queen's gardens and were discussing having a smaller reception with family and friends.

In September 2019, the royal announced her engagement with a series of portraits. The news came nearly a year after her sister, Princess Eugenie, tied the knot [2] with Jack Brooksbank. While it's still unclear if they will hold a private ceremony, we do have a handful of details about their possible nuptials. Keep reading for what we know ahead.

The Ring

Beatrice's engagement ring [4] was designed by her fiancé and created by London-based jeweller Shaun Leane. It features a larger round diamond in the centre, flanked by two baguette diamonds on either side and is reportedly worth around £100,000.

When Are Princess Beatrice and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi Getting Married?

After cancelling their 29 May wedding, it's currently unclear when the couple will tie the knot. The ceremony was originally set to take place at a chapel in St. James's Palace followed by a reception at Buckingham Palace.

"Princess Beatrice and Mr. Mapelli Mozzi are very much looking forward to getting married but are equally aware of the need to avoid undertaking any unnecessary risks in the current circumstances," Buckingham Palace said in a statement in March.

"They are particularly conscious of government advice in relation to both the wellbeing of older family members and large gatherings of people," the statement continued. "Therefore, the planned reception in the Buckingham Palace Gardens will not take place. The couple will carefully consider government advice before deciding whether a private marriage might take place amongst a small group of family and friends."

The Maid of Honour

Given that Beatrice served as her sister Princess Eugenie's maid of honour [5] in her 2018 wedding, we expect Beatrice will return the favour for her upcoming nuptials.

The Bridesmaids and Pageboys

Princess Charlotte and Prince George were front and centre for Eugenie's wedding [6], so we wouldn't be surprised if they reprised their bridesmaid and pageboy duties for Beatrice's wedding. It's also likely that Edo's 2-year-old son will serve as a pageboy in the wedding.

Will Princess Beatrice and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi's Wedding Be Televised?

Unlike Princess Eugenie's televised wedding, a rep for ITV told Entertainment Tonight that "there will not be a dedicated program covering [Princess Beatrice's] wedding [7] in full."

How Will Princess Beatrice's Wedding Be Different Than Princess Eugenie's?

According to People, Beatrice wants a more low-key wedding [8] than her younger sister's. "She has talked about having a smaller affair in the past," a friend told the publication, adding that the nuptials could take place in the Spring or later. "Beatrice is more serious and Eugenie is the outgoing extrovert, she's so bubbly and fun. Beatrice is more reserved and discreet. She holds back more, she is very polite, very well-educated but more formal and quiet in her personalty, so I think it will be a very different wedding to Eugenie's," another source added.
