Emma Mackey Might Play a Barbie, but Her Photographer Boyfriend Is Not "Just Ken"
Emma Mackey's career is on the rise. The French-born actor first gained fame playing the complicated Maeve Wiley in Netflix's "Sex Education". While the popular series premieres its fourth and final season in September, Mackey has gone on to play the lead role in "Emily", win the rising star award at the 2023 BAFTAs, and stars alongside her doppelgänger Margot Robbie in Greta Gerwig's "Barbie".
While Mackey's celebrity status might be on the up, she is notoriously private, keeping herself off social media meaning there is not a lot of detail about her love life. "I'm sure [the attention] can bring some benefits to some people, but I don't think it works for me. It brings me a tremendous amount of anxiety and discomfort," she told Elle in 2021 about her decision to keep off social media. "I'm very lucky to do my job, and I know that it's now a part of the job to do that kind of stuff, but it doesn't have to be. I want to be able to make a choice on that matter."
We do know that Mackey was previously dating fellow actor Dan Whitlam after the couple went Instagram official in January 2018. The post has since been deleted after Mackey came off the platform, but the couple had been spotted out and about together over the years.
However, there was another beau by her side at the BAFTAs who she turned to kiss as she accepted her award. While it's not clear when she split with Whitlam, it appears she is now in a relationship with photographer and film director Martin Aleman, as reported by Bustle. The two posed together on the red carpet at the BAFTAs in February, after which Aleman posted a photo of Mackey receiving her award with the caption "My Love" seemingly confirming their relationship. They were also spotted attending the West End production of "Cabaret" together weeks later, in which Mackey's "Sex Education" costar Aimee Lou Wood was starring at the time.
While it's unclear when the two got together, Aleman's Instagram includes shots of Mackey that he took for Flaunt Magazine dating back to April 2022, so the pair definitely met over a year ago. Keep reading to see some of the rare glimpses we have of the pair together.
