Fresh Off Their Victories, Here's What the Oscar Winners Are Doing Next

06/03/2018 - 12:45 AM

Now that we've all had a chance to witness this year's exciting Oscars ceremony, it's time to look on to the rest of 2018. Naturally, attention must be paid to this year's crop of winners [1]; after all, they're the cream of the cinematic crop right now, so to speak. With Oscars gold in hand, it's always exciting to see what these brilliant actors, actresses, and creators will get up to next. If you're eager for more, here's exactly what you should be looking out for.

Guillermo del Toro

If you hadn't guessed, del Toro isn't steering away from the fantasy genre any time soon. In November 2017, Netflix announced a two spin-offs to the creator's popular series Trollhunters, which is breaking ground on its second season. 3 Below and Wizards are two new extensions of the universe [3] that will introduce aliens and, well, wizards.

But wait! That's not all! Fox Searchlight is working with del Toro again [4] on two new films. One is a new supernatural story called Antlers. The other is a remake of the 1947 film, Nightmare Alley.

Frances McDormand

Next up for McDormand is a film that's already complete: Wes Anderson's Isle of Dogs, which is a delightful stop-motion animated film [5] set on a mystical space called Trash Island. There haven't been any announcements about new projects for the actress, but you can bet her next venture will certainly involve an inclusion rider [6].

Gary Oldman

Following his dramatic triumph in Darkest Hour, Oldman is taking an even darker turn. Most recently, he signed on for an independent thriller called Mary [7]. According to Variety, the films tells the story of "a family that buys an old ship at auction and discovers the ship's secrets once they are out on the isolated open waters." Sounds scary, right?

Allison Janney

Janney doesn't have any major film projects slated, but she's getting right back to work on her hilarious CBS series, Mom. In fact, back in the Oscars press room, she revealed she was getting back in the swing of things the next morning. "I have to be at a table read for Mom at 10 a.m. tomorrow morning," she said. "So I am going right back to work, and I will — I am so happy that I have a job to go to after something like this."

Sam Rockwell

This guy is going to be all over the map in 2018! He's already starring in a new Disney movie [8] called The One and Only Ivan alongside Angelina Jolie [9] and Bryan Cranston. The film is an adaptation of the book by Katherine Applegate.

Rockwell will also team up with Taraji P. Henson [10] for The Best of Enemies, a true-life race drama. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it "centres on the unlikely friendship between Ann Atwater (Henson), an outspoken black activist, and Claiborne Paul Ellis (Rockwell), a ranking member of the Ku Klux Klan, both of whom lived in Durham, N.C., in the turbulent 1960s civil rights era.

But wait, there's more! We can also look forward to a comedy called Blue Iguana that stars Rockwell, Ben Schwartz, and Phoebe Fox. According to Deadline, we can expect a release date in the back half of 2018.

And finally, Rockwell is also portraying George W. Bush [11] alongside Christian Bale [12] in a new biopic titled Cheney. And yes, it's about our former Vice President, Dick Cheney.

Jordan Peele

There's no signs of slowing down after such a fantastic and game-changing debut. Jordan Peele [13]'s many upcoming projects [14] include an untitled thriller [15] in the vein of Get Out and a Twilight Zone reboot [16] for CBS. He's also executive producing a new HBO series called Lovecraft Country [17]! It's based on an anthology horror book series that follows Atticus Black and friends as they go on a road trip full of racist nightmares during 1950s Jim Crow America.

James Ivory

Ivory may have written the award-winning screenplay for Call Me By Your Name, but he's stepping into other roles in the future. He'll serve as an executive producer on two upcoming projects. One is a Henry James adaptation called The Aspern Papers [18], starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers [19] and Joely Richardson. The other is a drama thriller called Andorra [20], starring Guy Pearce and Vanessa Redgrave.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Ivory also revealed he's trying to find financing for an on-screen adaptation of Shakespeare's Richard II [21]. "I've been working on Richard II now for five years," he said, "and haven't been able to pin down anybody willing to finance it."
