If anyone is looking to kick off an award show with a message, the 2020 BET Awards [1] has some notes. Celebrating its 20th anniversary, the show started things off with a recreation of Public Enemy's iconic "Fight the Power" music video with a modern twist. Chuck D and Flavour Flav were joined by a truly supreme lineup of artists to give the classic lyrics a new flavour, including Nas, Rapsody, YG, and the Roots' Black Thought.
The video's recreation included footage from the various protests against police brutality [2] in response to the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade and other Black victims, and in support of the Black Lives Matter movement [3]. Among many calls for system abolition [4] and demands for justice, "Fight the Power" has never felt more timely! Watch the video above.
