See What the Live-Action Aladdin Actors Look Like Next to Their Cartoon Counterparts

15/03/2019 - 09:12 PM

How does 1992's Aladdin [1] stack up to Disney's brand-new live-action retelling of the classic [2]? Well, thanks to the movie's latest trailer [3], we now have a better idea than ever.

From the romantic magic carpet ride through a cloudy sky to Jasmine's iconic turquoise number to all of the Genie's sarcastic one-liners, the Guy Ritchie-directed movie appears to have plenty of nods to the original. Despite initial wariness about Will Smith's interpretation of the Genie [4] — He's so blue! And what's up with that wonky CGI face [5]?! — the new footage has also given people a better idea of his interpretation of the character (he appears to be pretty damn funny, if you ask us).

If you're curious about how the other key elements from 2019's Aladdin stack up, keep reading to see the cast [6] (and one monkey) side by side with stills from Disney's original film!

Will Smith as the Genie

Yes, his face definitely seems a little too small for his body, but fortunately, Smith's version of the character doesn't look nearly as odd in motion (he also appears in human form quite a bit). Robin Williams [8] originated the role, and surely no one would ever be able to take his place, but we're excited to see how Smith puts his spin on it.

Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine

The Power Rangers actress has stepped into the role of the frustrated Arabian princess, who finds herself enamored with a certain street rat whether she wants to be or not.

Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine again (only she's undercover this time)

When Jasmine sneaks out of the palace to get a taste of the real world, she happens to be rescued from losing a hand by Aladdin, setting the events of the film in motion. As for her attire in this scene, the film's costume designer clearly wanted to step things up a notch, taking Jasmine from a drab, nondescript brown dress and scarf to an embroidered white number.

Mena Massoud as Aladdin

Playing Aladdin is Canadian actor Mena Massoud's big break in Hollywood, and the snippets we've seen of him in the trailer so far make us feel confident he's going to nail it. The only problem? THAT HE'S NOT SHIRTLESS, OBVIOUSLY.

Mena Massoud as the Prince Ali version of Aladdin

This is a pretty great translation of Prince Ali's white suit, no?

Full disclosure: we may or may not already be swooning.

Marwan Kenzari as Jafar

Dutch star Marwan Kenzari is playing Jafar this time around, and his real-life costume seems to be the closest to Disney's animated version. (Luckily they toned down the eyebrows, though.)

Abu!

No real monkeys were harmed in the CGI creation of Abu, who looks just as cute (and mischievous) as ever.

The lamp!

The live-action take on the lamp is much more detailed and embellished.
