"This was a modern love story. Boy meets girl. Boys falls in love with girl. Boy marries girl. Girl cuts off boy's penis."

Lorena Bobbitt's story made headlines all around the globe in 1993 and made her a terrifying household name. Now, Amazon is releasing the Jordan Peele-executive produced docuseries [1] that brings her side of the story into the spotlight. The four-part series, Lorena, re-examines the infamous scandal that began when Bobbitt went to trial for cutting off her husband's penis. When the trial began a media circus, Bobbitt's side of the story got lost in the frenzy, and the shock value eclipsed any scrutiny into the domestic abuse and sexual assault allegations she made against her husband, John Wayne.

According to Amazon, Lorena takes an in-depth look at the trial's coverage, endeavours to expose how the case "laid the groundwork for the modern 24-hour news cycle," and challenges "the long-held narrative that surrounded" it. The series's trailer features footage of the testimony presented at Bobbitt's trial, as well new interviews with Bobbitt and Wayne. "I didn't choose to be in the spotlight," Bobbitt says. "But there's no going back."

Both Bobbitt and Wayne were acquitted of all charges by 1994, Bobbitt for malicious wounding and Wayne for marital sexual assault, and divorced by 1995. Wayne went on to star in a series of adult films in the mid '90s, while Bobbitt has worked to help victims of domestic violence through her charity, Lorena's Red Wagon. Watch the trailer for Lorena above, and be on the lookout when it becomes available to stream on Amazon Prime Video on Feb. 15.
