Warning: spoilers for this week's episode of Grey's Anatomy [1] lie ahead.
This week on Grey's Anatomy [2], another ghost from the past returned to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. That's right: April's jilted ex-fiancé Matthew comes back [3], but he's in a completely different place now. Matthew is married to another woman, and they're about to have a baby! Like, right now. We watch over the course of the episode as Matthew's wife, Karin, gives birth to their child, then experiences some unforeseen complications that eventually lead to her death. Matthew is left alone to cope as a single father.
Call me crazy, but am I the only one who kind of wants April and Matthew to give things another go? There are a lot of levels here, so we have to break them down. By the end of the episode, it's clear Matthew is devastated and doesn't want anything to do with April. But that's because, as we learn, Matthew thinks April is still with Jackson. He also doesn't know their first baby died. In his eyes, April has a real happily ever after. But what if April were to tell him everything that she's been through? Perhaps they'd be able to reconnect in their shared trauma. Sure, April loses a child and Matthew loses his wife, but there's still the common experience of grief over death.
I know, I know. There's a vague insinuation that she hooks up with that handsome new intern, Vik Roy. After all, the two do get drunk next to each other and then shower together, presumably after doing the deed. We don't know for sure if April hooks up with him, but so what if she did? It's clear she's trying to escape from her truly wretched day. And one meaningless hookup doesn't necessarily mean the two will keep seeing each other. There's still room to reconcile with Matthew.
Additionally, consider this: the first time around, April was ready to spend her life with Matthew. They were mere minutes away from being bound in holy matrimony! If Jackson hadn't said anything, they might still be together! And don't get me wrong: I've been rooting for Jackson and April from the very beginning. In fact, I'm still kind of rooting for them. But the longer we go, the less likely a reconciliation seems. After all, there's still a chance that the strange relationship between Maggie and Jackson [6] might actually be a thing. Is it time to let Jackson and April go their separate ways?
The thing is, we know April and Matthew can work together. And even in this week's episode, we get a chance to see how alike Karin and April are. That's why it makes sense for these two to fall back in love. Maybe I just hate seeing April suffer and I hate seeing her descend into such darkness. If she and Matthew could find a way to reconnect (and actually make things work this time), it would be like a dawn at the end of a long, long night.
